Conrad's POV
I pushed open the front doors as I stepped into the silent mansion with my shoulders heavy with exhaustion. Another endless day of meetings , negotiations and pretending like I wasn't irritated by everyone around me.
As always the staffs had disappeared like shadows. Good, just the way I like it and all i want right now is a cold shower and silence.
" You're quite late today" David said out loud as he approached me with his usual calm self. "Frances Becker has arrived. " He continued. " .....she has been shown to her room and settled in"
A flicker of satisfaction appeared on my face . At least one less thing to worry about.
" Everything is in place......now all we need is do is book her an appointment with the gynecologist" He added
" Perfect." I stated and then asked. " Any news concerning her identity?"
Ever since David mentioned not finding her full records, I had been worried. The last person I want to be involved with is a psychopath or even worse...a spy.
" We're still working on it" David replied
" Well I need you to work faster... this is important David " I blurted out as I began to head towards the stairs. I need to know who the real Frances Becker is . " .......I already ate out, don't worry about me " I added as he gave me a slight nod.
My phone buzzed again. It was another text from Jason, but I ignored it. I still am not ready to deal with his ass.
I paused in front of the room assigned to Frances, the door was shut with a faint light glowing from underneath it. I stood there for a few seconds as I contemplated on whether to place a knock on it or not.
But I eventually chose the later. I didn't. I walked down the hall into my room and was undressing when a call came in ..... ofcourse it was from Jason. I figured there was no point avoiding it so I answered.
" What?" I answered very sharply with a demanding tone.
Jason scoffed at the other end of the phone as he spoke. " Seriously? That's how it is now?" He asked " I've been trying to reach you all morning, why haven't you been responding to my f*****g texts?" He asked
" If you were working, you'd understand how busy a business man can be" I blurted out to him as I unbuttoned my shirt.
The irritation in his voice was instant as he replied. " You're unbelievable Conrad. So you think you are better than everyone just because dad made you the ....."
" No.." I cut in immediately. I already knew where the conversation was heading to. " I don't live off handouts Jason " I added coldly.
I listened as he let out a sarcastic laugh. " You know what, I'm not going to waste my time arguing " he said. ".... You got my text right? I need a hundred thousand." He blurted out like it was spare change.
I let out a laugh of my own....but mine was cold and rather dangerous. " I sent you fifty thousand dollars last month Jason, what could you possibly need a hundred for?" I asked. I was beginning to get pissed with the entire conversation.
Jason's voice sharpened. " If you're going to act like a stingy bastard, fine......send me half of it then"
" No." I replied without any form of hesitation as I leaned against the dresser. " I am not your personal ATM, get yourself a job!"
At this point, his voice dropped low and nasty. " You are soo f*****g full of yourself Conrad! How dare you speak to me like I'm some sorry case?" He asked rhetorically. "You are not even the legitimate heir to the company! Do you think you are untouchable? You f*****g think that you are better than me?"
My blood boiled as his words registered into my brain and without waiting for another word, I ended the call.
I silently stood in the room for a moment as I clenched my fist together. It is always the same old conversation....the same old bitterness and the same old jealousy!
But tonight wasn't the night. I'm not going to let the entitled half brother of mine ruin my night. Not tonight Jason.
It's not my fault that he's an addict. It's not my fault that he can't control himself and get his act together, now he blames me for running the company and not handing him money like it's rightful his? Money he didn't work for?
Hell no!
I took off my remaining clothes and entered into the bathroom. I stood still as the cold shower poured all over my skin, hopefully washing away all of the negativity. Afterwards, I wrapped a towel all over my waist, dried off and then pulled out a grey sweatpants that hung low on my waist. I popped a mint into my mouth as I let it's sharp coolness clear my head.
At this point, I knew I needed to burn off the pent up frustration out of me and the perfect way to do that is to head to the home gym down the hall.
As I headed towards the home gym, I saw Frances come out of her room. I was taken aback for a few seconds as I wasn't expecting to run into her this night but I immediately regained my composure. The closer I got to her the more I saw her physique.
She wasn't dressed up, just an oversized t-shirt with a pair of jeans. Her hair was messy, probably from all the packing and unpacking she had to do.
Her eyes widened as soon as she noticed me. I could tell that she was nervous, she was anxious too. I got closer and saw look in her eyes.
Is that.... what I think it is?
I probably was overthinking it but then it hit me. I was shirtless with just my sweatpants that hung on my lower waist.
I watched as she subconscious stepped backwards and this made me smirk. It was clear as daylight that I was affecting her and I was enjoying it.
Who are you Frances? And why is there only three years of your records? I wanted to grab her and make her talk...and make her spill all that she is hiding but I knew I couldn't do that...at least not yet. I needed to make her think that I have fully accepted her.
So instead, I leaned against the wall and then spoke in a collected and controlling tone. " Long day......of settling in?"
My voice was smooth and lazily amused because I already knew the effect I had over her. All woman are the same. They easily get swayed by my confidence and voice. They all want a night with me so they can brag about it and I doubt if Frances Becker was an exception.
" Uhhh....yea I...I .." she stuttered, obviously distracted by my bare chest and torso. Her breathing was unsteady at this point so I smirked wider.
I deliberately moved closer to her and watched as she instinctively backed up until her spine hit the wall.
I was close.....close enough. But not touching. I was close enough that she felt the heat of my body, the fresh scent of soap and mint combined with the power radiating off me. I watched as she avoided my eyes so I grabbed her chin lightly and made her face me. I could see her face clearly, every inch of it... every single detail.
I listened as her breath increased rapidly.
" I need you to look at me when I speak" I said with a dangerous tone.
She remained silent.
" Nervous?" I asked her as she titled her face to the other side. " I can read you Frances" I whispered to her
I didn't understand why I was whispering at this point.
" I'm not nervous..." She replied
I scoffed at her face. " Do yourself a favour and don't lie to me." My voice was deep and intimidating
At this point time stopped...as the air between us burned deeply with tension.
She couldn't speak, she couldn't even move but I stepped closer.....I don't know why but I just felt the need to. The need to be close to her. I placed both hands casually on the wall, caging her in the process.
Her breath hitched. I heard it and it made me smirk once again, but this time darker.
For a moment none of us moved, we just stared deeply into each other's eyes and just when she thought I'd lean in for whatever, I immediately pulled back and stepped away like nothing happened.
" Good night Frances" I blurted out as I walked away like I was unbothered and in control. But deep down, I knew what I had done to her.
I walked into the gym and started on the treadmill..... and about twenty minutes later, another call came in.
It was an unknown number.... private number.
A frowned at this discovery and contemplated on whether to answer it or not, but I did eventually.
" Conrad King" I said flatly.
There was silence.
" Hello?" I said but got no response still.
At this point I was beginning to think it was a spam call and was about to end it when a voice came up. " Conrad King.." the voice drawled. It sounded very automated too. " Do you really think we forgot what happened that night?" He asked
My feet immediately stopped moving as I began to process his words.
" We know your secret" The voice continued
" Who is this?" I asked
Who the f**k has the nerve to call me!? A million and one questions began to run through my mind as I gave him my undivided attention.
" How does it feel living with the blood of people on your hands?" The caller continued as his words made my heart slammed once and hard.
No. No f*****g way. This cannot be possible. There's absolutely no way this is happening. It's been six years already and all the witnesses had been taken cared of.
" Don't worry...we won't say anything...as long as you do exactly as we say, because we know what you did and how you did it."
Before I could say any other thing, the call ended. I immediately began to hyperventilate. My chest immediately tightened.
I didn't move. I didn't know how to because the one secret I thought I had,...was no longer a secret.
