A Heir For The King

1310 Words
Conrad's POV I stormed out of the hospital with David Kincaid, my trusted man, as two bodyguards trailed behind us. My thoughts were clouded at this point. I was confused and irritated at the same time. My entire being was filled with a low burn of fury that the clinic had dared to mess with me this way! How could they have made such a catastrophic mistake? The email David had showed me this morning had set my blood boiling, I had been filled with absolute rage to discover that my sperm had been used on someone else, someone who I didn't approve! My hands tightened around the arm-rest as the door shut closed and my driver pulled into the traffic. David remained silent as he sat beside me, he knows better than to interrupt when I was going through a dilemma, especially one that involves my future, the future of Kings corporation. " How could they have made such a blunder?" I blurted out to myself . My voice was low yet sharp that it could cut through any steel. David cleared his throat beside me, his tone was measured as if trying his best not to piss me off any further. " Conrad" he started gently. " I know you're angry which you rightfully should be but then, maybe this isn't all bad .... this is what you've wanted for the past one year, a child, an heir. The first two attempts were absolute failures and now by some stroke of luck....." " Luck?" I cut him off as I turned to face him " is that what you call luck when someone tampers with my plans? When they cross me without permission?" I asked at once I watched as he held my gaze without flinching . " You are right....but then, the surrogate is pregnant , that wasn't planned yes, but it's happened. And if you'd allow me to say, that is a miracle!" He stated out loud I leaned back into the leather seat as I processed his words and then stared out into the busy city as we rode on. Miracle? I let out a scornful laugh as I muttered the words to myself. I don't believe in miracles. I believe in control, precision and result but then, nothing about today has been within my control and I hated it! It pissed me off really bad. But then, David was right. " She's carrying my child" I said in a low voice as I began to process the information positively. It felt foreign, strange and almost dangerous. " Yes" David replies with a nod. "...and that's the part that matters now" I let out a deep sigh as I dragged my hand across my jawline. " The hospital should actually consider themselves lucky, if she wasn't already pregnant I would have burnt the entire building to the ground!" I stated out loud in an intimidating tone David didn't doubt me, he never did because he knew that I was capable of anything. That's one of the benefits of being powerful. " What's her name?" I finally asked " Frances Becker" He replied almost immediately. It's as if he already had it installed into his memory. I repeated the name a few times in my head as I tried to memorize it myself. " Like I stated earlier, I want the contract first thing in the morning by tomorrow" I continued " ....I also need a full background check on the surrogate, medical history, family, finances.....everything single detail " If she's going to carry my heir then I need to know what I am dealing with. " It will be done" I watched as David got to work on his tablet. The cars slowed as we pulled into the private entrance of Kings corporation. The bodyguards stepped out first to scan the area before David and I followed suite. The polished black glass of the building reflected a man who should have been victorious but Instead, conflicted and unsettled. I headed straight to the 20th floor as Esther Jones, my heavily pregnant secretary greeted me as soon as she saw me. It was obvious that she had only a few weeks left before going into labour. " Mr King" she greeted as I responded with a slight nod. " Remember you have a 1pm interview for the temporary secretary position while I'm away " She continued as her hand rested lightly on her swollen tummy. Ofcourse Esther, I know you're going on maternity leave soon. " I'm aware" I replied her firmly even though my mind was elsewhere. After settling into my office, I tried to busy myself with work ....contracts, projects, even figures that demanded attention but unfortunately my mind just wouldn't corporate. Instead it kept circling back to the hospital, to the woman who looked soo startled and frightened as soon as I walked in. My mind kept going back to the woman who was now carrying my child... Frances Becker. She hadn't spoken much, but there had been something in her eyes with the way my gaze held hers . A flicker of defiance hidden beneath the numerous layers of nervousness. My phone buzzed beside me, breaking the silence and then bringing me back from my wandering thoughts. It was a call from my best friend, Ashford Callahan. " Hello" I answered it without any hesitation " What's up King?.. did you get my text?" He asked over the phone " Text? What text?" I responded as I had no idea what he was talking about. I had been soo consumed with all thats going on to check my phone. " Oh c'mon man, I sent you one this morning....... remember the German company I spoke to you about? " He asked and then continued. " Two of their representatives are in town and they've agreed to have lunch together!" I could hear the excitement in his voice but I remained silent for a few seconds. " Conrad? Are you there?" He asked " Yes...I heard you" I replied him firmly. Ashford has been trying to set me up with a German company, claiming that business with them would be beneficial for King's corporation, but I really have not taken it seriously. " So are you down?" He asked But I didn't respond still..... until. " Ash..." " Oh seriously Man.... it's just lunch!" He stated over the phone. " What's the worse that could happen?" He asked rhetorically True. I mean what's the worse that could happen with just a lunch date with some foreigners? " Alright then....." I agreed reluctantly even though the idea of food sat heavy in my stomach right now. " Great! I will send you the time and location...or better still, I might pick you up myself!" With that he ended the call. Time ticked on and then about twenty minutes later, Esther walked into my office after a brief knock with her tone professional as ever. " Mr King, the candidate for the temporary secretary position is here" "Send her in" I replied firmly. I was the final person to vet the candidate and be sure that she is qualified and capable of handling the position as my secretary. I watched as Esther turned and gestured for the candidate to come in. And then as if today couldn't get any weirder..... The woman who stepped into my office was no stranger. I knew that face, those wide uncertain eyes. The woman from the hospital. The woman carrying my child. Frances Becker. And then, my world titled again. For the first time in years, I found myself caught off guard , unable to mask the expression of shock that appeared on my face. And in that moment, I knew today was only the beginning of a storm.
