Chapter 3: Something Is Growing

1090 Words
I told myself it meant nothing. That night. That stranger. Those feelings. All of it. I repeated it in my head like a shield as I stepped back into the pack house, ignoring the looks, the whispers, the judgment that followed me like a shadow. Nothing had changed. At least… that’s what I wanted to believe. But the moment I crossed the threshold, I felt it. A shift. Subtle, but undeniable. Like something inside me had awakened. I paused, my hand pressing lightly against my chest. The emptiness from the broken bond was still there—but now it wasn’t the only thing I felt. There was something else. Something faint. Something… alive. I frowned, shaking my head. “You’re imagining things,” I muttered under my breath. Of course I was. After everything that happened, my body, my mind—none of it was stable. I just needed rest. Time. Distance. That’s all. ⸻ The days that followed were worse than I expected. No one said anything directly to my face. But they didn’t need to. The looks were enough. The whispers louder than words. “The rejected omega…” “She thought she could be Luna…” “How embarrassing…” Each comment chipped away at me, but I refused to break. Not again. Not in front of them. I kept my head down. I stayed out of the way. Invisible. Just like I had always been. Except— Something wasn’t right. It started small. A wave of dizziness while I was carrying supplies. A sudden sensitivity to smells that made my stomach twist. Food I used to eat without thinking now made me nauseous. I barely made it outside before throwing up behind the storage house, my body trembling as I wiped my mouth. “What is wrong with me…?” I whispered. This wasn’t normal. Even for stress. Even for heartbreak. My hand drifted to my stomach without thinking. And for a moment— Just one moment— A strange thought crossed my mind. But I pushed it away immediately. “No,” I said firmly. That wasn’t possible. It couldn’t be. ⸻ “Lyra.” My entire body froze. That voice. Deep. Commanding. Unmistakable. Slowly, I turned around. Kael Draven stood a few feet away, his presence as overwhelming as ever. The air around him felt heavier, sharper—like it demanded attention. Like it demanded obedience. My heart betrayed me instantly, skipping a beat despite everything. Despite the pain. Despite the rejection. “Alpha,” I said quietly, lowering my gaze. I refused to let him see anything more. Weakness. Emotion. Anything. But something was wrong. Because he wasn’t looking at me the way he had that night. Cold. Distant. Untouchable. No… This time, his eyes lingered. Longer than they should have. Like he was trying to see something. Understand something. His brows furrowed slightly. “You don’t look well,” he said. The words caught me off guard. Concern? From him? No. That wasn’t possible. “I’m fine,” I replied quickly. Too quickly. His gaze sharpened. “You’re lying.” My fingers clenched at my sides. Why did he care? He didn’t want me. He made that clear. So why was he standing here? Talking to me like this? “I said I’m fine, Alpha,” I repeated, forcing calm into my voice. A flicker of irritation crossed his face. But something else was there too. Something darker. Something almost… restless. “You smell different,” he said suddenly. My breath caught. “What?” He stepped closer. Instinctively, I stepped back. But it didn’t stop him. The distance between us closed in seconds. Too close. Way too close. My heart began to race again, panic mixing with something I didn’t want to name. His gaze locked onto mine, intense and searching. “Your scent,” he said, his voice lower now. “It’s changed.” I swallowed hard. That was impossible. Wasn’t it? “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I whispered. But even to my own ears, it sounded weak. Unconvincing. His eyes narrowed slightly, like he didn’t believe me. Like he knew something I didn’t. For a moment, neither of us moved. The tension between us stretched thin, fragile, dangerous. Then— He stepped back. And just like that, the moment broke. “Stay out of trouble,” he said coldly, his expression hardening again. The Alpha King was back. Untouchable. Unreachable. Like nothing had happened. Like that strange moment between us never existed. Without another word, he turned and walked away. Leaving me standing there, confused, shaken… and somehow even more unsettled than before. ⸻ That night, I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw his face. Not the cold, rejecting Alpha. But the way he looked at me today. Like something wasn’t right. Like something had changed. My hand slowly moved to my stomach again. That feeling… It was stronger now. Not painful. Not uncomfortable. Just… there. Constant. Quiet. Real. A deep sense of unease settled in my chest. Because no matter how much I tried to deny it— The signs were there. The dizziness. The nausea. The sensitivity. The change. My breathing became uneven. “No…” I whispered into the darkness. But the word didn’t feel strong anymore. Didn’t feel certain. My heart pounded harder as the truth I had been avoiding began to take shape. There was only one explanation. One possibility. One answer I wasn’t ready to face. My fingers curled tightly against the fabric of my dress. “That night…” I whispered. The stranger. The mistake. The moment I tried to forget. My stomach twisted again—but this time, it wasn’t from sickness. It was fear. Raw. Unavoidable. Terrifying. Because if what I was thinking was true— Then my life wasn’t just broken. It was about to become something far more dangerous. Far more complicated. Far more impossible to escape. Tears burned my eyes as I curled into myself, gripping the one secret I wasn’t ready to speak out loud. “I can’t be…” I whispered. But deep down— I already knew. ⸻ Somewhere, not far away… Kael Draven stood alone in the darkness, his jaw tight, his expression unreadable. Something was wrong. He felt it. A pull. Faint. But growing stronger. And for the first time in his life— The Alpha King didn’t understand it. His eyes darkened as one thought crossed his mind. Why does she feel… different?
