The great hall was a cavern of shadows and candlelight, filled with the suffocating air of politics and ancient power. Nora stood at the threshold, her pulse hammering so loudly she was certain the entire council could hear it.
She hadn’t meant to come here. Blade had ordered her to stay hidden. But when she heard the voices—low, sharp, vibrating with anger—she knew they were speaking of her. She couldn’t stay away. Not when her very existence had become the spark for war.
The council chamber stretched before her, carved of obsidian stone. High-backed chairs lined the dais, each occupied by a vampire elder whose presence made the air feel thick and heavy. Their eyes, red or black with age, glittered like knives in the dim light.
And there—at the center—stood Blade.
His presence dwarfed them all. Cloaked in black, his power licked through the chamber like fire through dry wood. His voice was calm, but each syllable was edged with steel.
“She is under my protection,” he said. “You will not touch her.”
A tall elder with pale, sunken eyes leaned forward, sneering. “You dare break a thousand years of decree, my king? Wolves and vampires do not bond. The last time it was attempted, kingdoms fell. Blood drowned the land. Do you wish to repeat history?”
“History,” Blade spat, “was written by cowards who feared power they could not control.”
Nora’s breath caught. The entire room trembled with his fury.
Another elder slammed his fist against the table. “We have tolerated your… eccentricities, Blade. Your rule has always been absolute. But this—this wolf—” He bared his fangs in disgust. “She is a violation.”
That was when Blade’s head turned slightly. His crimson gaze shifted, locking on the shadows where she stood hidden.
“Nora,” he said softly.
The room stilled.
Every elder’s head turned in unison.
Her heart leapt into her throat. No—she hadn’t meant for him to reveal her. She wanted to shrink back into the darkness, but his voice… his bond… pulled her forward.
Step by step, her boots echoed across the marble floor as she entered the council chamber. The weight of a dozen eyes pressed down on her, stripping her bare.
She stopped beside Blade, close enough to feel his heat, his shadows curling protectively around her. He reached for her hand, threading his cold fingers through hers, defiance in every movement.
“This,” he said, his voice ringing with lethal certainty, “is Nora. She is my mate.”
A collective hiss rippled through the council, some leaning back in outrage, others staring at her with hungry curiosity.
One of the oldest, a woman draped in silver silk, studied her carefully. “A wolf,” she murmured. “Mated to the Vampire King.” She tilted her head. “You do realize, child, what you’ve done? You’ve bound yourself to death. Your kind will never forgive you. Nor will ours.”
Nora swallowed, her throat dry, but forced her voice steady. “I didn’t choose the bond. But neither did he. It’s… real.”
The woman’s lips curled into something between pity and disdain. “And what will you do when the bond demands his darkness of you? When his hunger turns to you? Will you bleed for him, wolf-girl?”
Nora felt her face heat, not from shame—but from the undeniable truth already pulsing in her veins. She would bleed for him. And that terrified her as much as it thrilled her.
Blade’s grip on her hand tightened, his voice dropping into something that silenced every murmur.
“She will not bleed for me,” he said. “But for her, I will slaughter the earth if I must. Do not test me.”
The threat hung heavy in the air.
The council shifted uneasily, whispering among themselves. The silver-draped woman’s smile widened faintly, as though entertained.
“Then so be it,” she said at last. “But mark my words, King of Shadows. This bond of yours will not end in love. It will end in ruin.”
Nora shivered.
Blade pulled her closer, his arm wrapping firmly around her waist as though shielding her from invisible daggers. “Let ruin come,” he murmured against her hair. “As long as I have her.”
The elders rose one by one, their departure echoing with whispered promises of rebellion. Nora could feel it—the spark of war had been lit.
When the chamber emptied, silence returned. She turned to Blade, her voice trembling. “You exposed me. To all of them. Do you realize what you’ve done?”
His crimson eyes burned into hers, filled with hunger, with possession. “Yes,” he said, brushing his lips against hers. “I’ve made it impossible for them to ever take you from me.”
The kiss that followed was fierce, desperate, edged with danger. The kind of kiss that tasted like the beginning of both love… and destruction.
