Chapter Five: Shadow Desire

555 Words
The moonlight spilled through the arched windows of the vampire king’s castle, bathing the grand hall in silver. Nora sat at the edge of the long dining table, her body tense, her every sense screaming at her to run. The dark velvet dress she’d been given clung to her frame, making her feel like a doll dressed for display. At the far end of the table, Blade Adrian sat like a king carved from the shadows themselves, his crimson eyes fixed on her. He hadn’t looked away once since she’d entered the room. “You’re trembling, Omega,” his voice was low, laced with a predator’s hunger. “Do you fear me that much?” Nora swallowed hard, lifting her chin even though her heart pounded. “You saved me… but that doesn’t mean I trust you.” His lips curled into a dangerous smirk. “Trust is not required, little wolf. Only obedience.” Her fists clenched under the table. “I won’t be your pet.” Blade leaned forward slightly, his gaze burning hotter. “Pet? No. You’re far more than that. You’re mine. My mate.” His voice deepened, thrumming like a chord that plucked directly at her soul. “The bond already coils inside you, doesn’t it? I can feel it… every shiver, every denial. It only makes me want you more.” Nora’s chest tightened. The bond—she had been trying to fight it, but it was there, pulling her toward him like invisible chains. Every time his eyes met hers, something inside her screamed that she belonged to him. “I’ll never accept you,” she whispered, though her voice trembled with uncertainty. Blade rose from his chair with a fluid grace, each step echoing in the vast hall as he closed the distance. His presence smothered the air around her, intoxicating, suffocating. He tilted her chin upward with a finger, forcing her eyes to lock with his. “You don’t have to accept me, Nora,” he murmured, his breath brushing against her lips. “Fate already has. And fate is crueler than I could ever be.” Her body betrayed her, leaning into his touch even as her mind screamed to pull away. The warmth of his hand was searing, dangerous, and yet she couldn’t resist. “You’ll break me,” she said hoarsely. His crimson gaze softened, though the obsession still burned behind it. “No, little wolf. I’ll rebuild you. You were born to burn in my darkness.” Her breath caught. For a moment, the room seemed to fade away, leaving only his piercing eyes and the pull of the mate bond tightening around her like a noose and a promise all at once. But then, distant footsteps echoed through the corridor. Blade’s head snapped toward the sound, his expression darkening. “Stay here,” he ordered, his tone leaving no room for disobedience. Before Nora could protest, he vanished into the shadows, his presence retreating like a storm pulled back across the horizon. She sat frozen, her hands trembling against the table. The pull of the bond lingered in her chest, dragging her thoughts back to him even as she wanted nothing more than to escape. And yet, deep down, a terrifying truth began to bloom. Part of her didn’t want to.
