Chapter 19: The Fire Beneath the Moon

788 Words
The castle was quieter now. The rain had stopped, leaving the scent of storm and earth seeping through the open balcony doors. Somewhere in the distance, the guards dragged away the last of the assassins—those who’d dared to breach the Vampire King’s domain. But in the chamber, time stood still. Nora sat on the edge of the bed, her pulse still racing from the chaos, her thoughts a tangle of fear and longing. Blade stood before the dying fire, his cloak discarded, his bare chest marked with faint cuts that glowed like molten silver in the flickering light. He hadn’t said a word since he returned from the hunt. Not one. She watched him in silence, her fingers curling around the sheets, until the weight of it became unbearable. “Blade…” His head turned, crimson eyes finding her through the dimness. “You shouldn’t have left the room,” he said, his tone low, dangerous—not in anger, but in something far heavier. “If they had touched you—” “They didn’t,” she whispered. He strode toward her in two long steps, his shadows swirling behind him like a living storm. “But they could have. Do you understand what that means?” She rose, meeting his fury head-on even as her heart pounded. “It means you can’t lock me away forever! You can’t fight the entire world to keep me safe!” “I will if I must.” “Then what will you have left, Blade?” she demanded, voice cracking. “A kingdom of ashes and a caged mate who no longer recognizes you?” Silence. The words hung between them, sharp as daggers and just as true. He reached for her suddenly, pulling her against him so hard she gasped. His forehead pressed to hers, his voice breaking. “You think I don’t know what I’m becoming? I can feel it, Nora. Every time I see you hurt, every time I smell fear on your skin, I lose a part of myself.” Her breath trembled. “Then stop fighting for me.” He cupped her face, his thumb brushing away a tear she hadn’t realized had fallen. “I can’t.” And then his lips were on hers. The kiss wasn’t gentle this time. It was desperate. A confession without words. His hunger met hers, raw and consuming. She clutched his shoulders, nails digging into his skin, feeling the thrum of his power through every inch of her. When his fangs grazed her bottom lip, she didn’t pull away. Instead, she tilted her head back, her wolf rising beneath her skin, caught between instinct and surrender. “Do it,” she breathed. He froze. His eyes—dark red and trembling with restraint—searched hers. “You don’t know what you’re asking.” “Yes,” she whispered, her voice trembling but sure. “I do.” A low growl vibrated in his chest, and then—slowly, reverently—his mouth descended to her throat. The sting of his bite sent a shiver down her spine, a rush of heat that blurred pain into pleasure. The bond between them flared, burning white-hot, filling the air with ancient energy that made the candles flicker and the walls hum. When he drew back, his lips were stained crimson, his eyes glowing like the heart of a dying star. “You’re mine now,” he said hoarsely. Nora’s knees weakened, her breath catching. “And you’re mine.” He smiled then—softly, almost human. “Say it again.” “You’re mine, Blade.” That broke him. He crushed her to him, their hearts beating in sync, the mark on her neck pulsing with heat. It wasn’t just blood that bound them now—it was something older, deeper, dangerous. Outside, the moon climbed high, casting silver light over their entwined figures. For the first time since the night she’d been hunted, Nora felt no fear. Not of the council. Not of her past. Not even of the creature who held her. Because beneath all the darkness and hunger, she’d found something she never expected in the Vampire King— a soul that ached just as hers did. And as Blade whispered her name against her skin, promising forever with every breath, Nora knew this was only the beginning of their undoing. --- 🔥 Chapter 19 Summary: Blade returns from the fight, shaken by how close Nora came to danger.
