Jock and the boy rode west around Tucson and came to the Tucson Mountains. A haze hung over Tucson and the sprawl of the city surprised Jock; it had been a long time since he"d come this far north. They were nearer the White Eyes civilization and settlements than he cared to be, but he reckoned no one would expect to find two Apache warriors so near a city. Moreover, he was sure that Hargan would not deploy this far north. They sat quietly in the saddle, and the sound of a car carried across the desert. Jock searched for it with the long glasses and spotted a Model T Ford truck, heading away from them towards Tucson.
