THE SISTER I NEVER KNEW

1012 Words
Charlotte couldn't move. She couldn't speak. She could only stare. What... The woman standing at the top of the stairs looked like she had stepped out of a forgotten memory. Same dark hair. Same green eyes. Same delicate features. It was like looking into a mirror from another lifetime. But Charlotte knew one thing. Mirrors didn't cry. And the woman in front of her was crying. "I'm sorry." The stranger's voice trembled. "I know this is a lot." Charlotte tightened her grip on the object in her hand. "Who are you?" The woman slowly walked down the stairs. "My name is Amelia Bennett." Charlotte shook her head. "No." The woman stopped. "I understand why you don't believe me." "Because it's impossible." Charlotte's voice cracked. "I don't have a sister." Amelia looked down sadly. "That's what they wanted you to believe." A cold feeling moved through Charlotte. "Who is 'they'?" Amelia didn't answer immediately. Instead, she looked around the house. The same house Charlotte had grown up in. The same place filled with childhood memories. "This place..." She whispered. "It still looks the same." Charlotte noticed the sadness in her eyes. "You've been here before." Amelia looked at her. "Yes." "When?" A pause. "Before you could remember." Charlotte didn't know whether to believe her. Everything about the situation was impossible. Yet something inside her recognized Amelia. Not her face. Not her voice. Something deeper. Like a missing piece of herself had suddenly appeared. "How do I know you're telling the truth?" Amelia reached into her coat pocket. Slowly, she removed a small necklace. Charlotte's breath caught. It was a silver necklace with a tiny snowflake pendant. Her own necklace. The one Jonathan had given her when she was five. But this one had two halves. Amelia held the matching piece. "Our mother gave us these." Charlotte stared. "Our mother?" Amelia nodded. "Eleanor Blackwood." The name sent a chill through her. "My mother died when I was young." "No." Amelia's eyes filled with sadness. "She was murdered." Charlotte felt the room spin. "No." "Jonathan never told you." "Because he promised Eleanor he would protect you." Charlotte stepped back. "Stop." She covered her ears. "This isn't real." Amelia looked heartbroken. "I wish it wasn't." A loud knock suddenly echoed through the house. Both women froze. Charlotte looked toward the front door. "Did you tell anyone you were coming?" Amelia shook her head. "No." The knocking came again. Harder. Charlotte's instincts screamed. Something was wrong. She grabbed Amelia's hand. "Come with me." They moved quietly toward the back hallway. Another knock. Then a voice. "Charlotte?" Her heart stopped. "Ethan?" She almost ran toward the door. But Amelia grabbed her arm. "Don't." Charlotte looked at her. "Why?" "Because whoever is outside..." Her expression turned fearful. "...is not Ethan." The voice came again. "Charlotte, open the door." It sounded exactly like him. But something was wrong. Charlotte slowly moved closer. "How do you know?" Amelia whispered: "Because Ethan Blackwood is the reason I escaped." Charlotte froze. "What?" Before she could ask more... The door exploded open. A masked figure entered the house. Charlotte pulled Amelia behind her. The intruder searched the room. "Charlotte Bennett." The voice was distorted. "Where is she?" Charlotte's heart raced. "Who?" The figure tilted their head. "The other daughter." Amelia grabbed Charlotte's hand. They moved backward. Suddenly, a sound came from outside. Car tires. Fast footsteps. The masked figure turned. Someone else was approaching. A second later... The front door opened. "Ethan!" Charlotte felt relief. Ethan stepped inside. His eyes immediately found Charlotte. Then Amelia. His expression changed. Shock. Recognition. Fear. The masked figure noticed him. "You were faster than expected." Ethan stepped forward. "Who are you?" The figure smiled. "You already know." Ethan's jaw tightened. "I don't." The intruder pulled out a weapon. Charlotte gasped. Ethan moved instantly. He pushed Charlotte and Amelia behind him. The gun fired. The bullet hit the wall. Ethan tackled the attacker. The two men fought across the room. Charlotte watched helplessly. She had never seen Ethan like this. Not calm. Not controlled. Angry. Like he was fighting something personal. The masked figure escaped through the broken window. Before disappearing, he looked back. "You should ask your precious Blackwood heir why he never told you about Amelia." Then he vanished. The house became silent. Ethan stood near the window, breathing heavily. Charlotte looked at him. "What did he mean?" Ethan didn't answer. Her voice became sharper. "Ethan." He turned. His expression was unreadable. "I didn't know Amelia was alive." Charlotte looked at Amelia. Then back at him. "But you knew about her." Silence. That was enough. Charlotte's heart sank. "You did." "I knew there were rumors." "Rumors?" "Charlotte—" "No." She stepped back. "You knew something about my family and you said nothing." "I was trying to protect you." "Everyone keeps saying that." Her voice broke. "But all anyone does is hide things from me." Ethan looked hurt. "I swear I never wanted to hurt you." "Then tell me the truth." He opened his mouth. But before he could speak... Amelia interrupted. "Because he can't." Both turned. Amelia looked at Ethan. "You still don't remember everything, do you?" Ethan frowned. "What are you talking about?" Amelia's eyes filled with sadness. "You were there that night." Charlotte froze. "What night?" Amelia looked at Ethan. "The night our parents died." Ethan went completely still. "No." "Yes." "I was eleven." "You were." Amelia stepped closer. "And you saw who killed them." The room fell silent. Charlotte looked between them. "Ethan..." His face had gone pale. "I don't remember." Amelia whispered: "But your mind does." Suddenly, Ethan grabbed the edge of the table. A flash of memory hit him. Fire. Screaming. A young Charlotte crying. A man standing in the shadows. And a voice saying: "Take the boy. Leave the girls." Ethan stumbled backward. Charlotte rushed toward him. "Ethan!" He looked at her with fear in his eyes. Because for the first time... He remembered something. Something that could destroy everything. And the person in his memory... Was someone Charlotte trusted.
