THE CONTRACT THAT BINDS US

1040 Words
The words refused to leave Charlotte's mind. A marriage agreement. Between the Blackwoods and the Bennetts. Between their families. Between her... And Ethan. The drive back to Blackwood Manor was silent. Too silent. Charlotte sat beside Ethan, watching the city lights blur through the window. She wanted to ask questions. A hundred of them. But every time she looked at him, she saw something she hadn't noticed before. Fear. Not the kind of fear that came from danger. The kind that came from discovering a truth powerful enough to destroy everything you believed. "You knew something like this existed." Her voice broke the silence. Ethan kept his eyes on the road. "No." "Then why do you look like you already know what it says?" His jaw tightened. "Because my family has always been good at hiding things." Charlotte looked down. "Apparently mine too." The sadness in her voice made Ethan glance at her. For a moment, he wanted to reach for her hand. To tell her everything would be okay. But he knew better than anyone. Promises were dangerous. Especially promises made in a world built on lies. --- When they arrived at Blackwood Manor, the atmosphere was different. The once elegant mansion now felt like a battlefield. Security surrounded the property. Every entrance was guarded. Every shadow looked suspicious. Lucas was waiting inside. "Ethan." He handed him a folder. "We found it in Alexander's private archive." Charlotte stood beside Ethan as he opened it. Inside was an old document. Yellowed pages. Official seals. Two family crests. The Blackwood crest. The Bennett crest. At the top were the words: THE UNION AGREEMENT Charlotte's heart sank. She read the first line. "To protect the future of both families, the heirs shall remain connected by blood, loyalty, and marriage..." She stopped. Marriage. Her eyes moved down the page. Then froze. "Ethan..." He looked at her. "What?" Her voice became quiet. "Your name." He looked down. His expression changed. Because beneath the agreement were two names. Ethan Alexander Blackwood. Charlotte Eleanor Bennett. --- "No." Charlotte stepped back. "This can't be real." Ethan immediately moved toward her. "Charlotte—" "Don't." The pain in her voice stopped him. "Everyone knew except me." "Not me." "You knew there were secrets." "Yes." "And you still kept me close." His expression softened. "Because I didn't know the truth." "But you knew enough." Silence. Charlotte turned away. She hated that she was angry. Because the worst part was... She still trusted him. And that scared her more than anything. --- Later that night, Charlotte couldn't sleep. The mansion felt different. Every hallway held another secret. Every room contained another unanswered question. She walked downstairs and found Ethan in the library. He stood beside the fireplace, holding an old photograph. She stopped. "I thought you would be asleep." He looked up. "I thought you would be avoiding me." "I tried." A small smile touched his lips. "And?" "It didn't work." For a moment, neither spoke. The tension between them was impossible to ignore. Charlotte noticed the exhaustion on his face. "You haven't slept." "Neither have you." "I'm not the one carrying an entire family's secrets." He looked down. "Maybe I am." The sadness in his voice softened her anger. She stepped closer. "Ethan." He looked at her. "I know you're scared." His eyes narrowed slightly. "I'm not scared." "You are." A pause. "You're scared that if you let people close, they'll leave." The words hit too close. His expression changed. Charlotte realized she was right. "I've spent my whole life watching people disappear." His voice was low. "My parents." "My family." "Everyone." She looked at him gently. "I'm still here." The silence between them became heavy. Not uncomfortable. Just full. Ethan looked at her like he was fighting a battle inside himself. "Charlotte..." "What?" "You don't understand what you do to me." Her heartbeat quickened. "What do I do?" He stepped closer. "You're the only person who makes me forget who I'm supposed to be." The distance between them disappeared. For a moment, Charlotte forgot about the secrets. The Ravens. The danger. The lies. There was only Ethan. The man she was warned to fear. The man who had protected her. The man who looked at her like she mattered. His hand slowly reached up, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. The touch was gentle. Careful. Like he was asking permission without words. Charlotte didn't move away. "Ethan..." His eyes searched hers. "Tell me to stop." She didn't. Instead, she whispered: "I don't want you to." The moment stretched between them. But before anything else could happen— A loud crash echoed from upstairs. They immediately pulled apart. The spell was broken. Ethan's expression turned serious. "Stay behind me." Charlotte rolled her eyes. "You really love saying that." "Because you really love ignoring it." Despite the danger, she almost smiled. They moved upstairs carefully. The sound came from the old west wing. A place nobody used. A place forbidden to enter. Ethan pushed open the door. Inside was a room covered with dust. Old furniture. Ancient books. And in the center... A wall covered with photographs. Charlotte stepped closer. Her blood ran cold. The photographs weren't of the Blackwood family. They were of her. Hundreds of pictures. Charlotte as a child. Charlotte at school. Charlotte with Jonathan. Charlotte growing up. Someone had been watching her entire life. Ethan picked up a photograph from the table. His face changed. "What?" He handed it to her. It was a picture of Charlotte as a baby. Beside her... Was another baby. Amelia. But behind them stood a man. A man Charlotte recognized. Her father's closest friend. The man who had comforted her after Jonathan's shooting. The man she trusted. Jonathan's business partner. Charlotte whispered: "No..." Ethan looked at her. "Who is he?" Her hands trembled. Because the truth was impossible. The man in the photograph... Was supposed to have died twenty years ago. Then suddenly— The lights went out. A voice came from the darkness. "Charlotte..." She froze. The voice was familiar. Too familiar. Then the lights returned. And standing at the doorway... Was Jonathan Bennett. Alive. But the man she thought she knew... Was holding a gun.
