CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE: A Day of Dreams

Honor rose early and decided to go to the library even though it was unlikely that Patrick was there. She decided to send for chocolate and read as she waited for him. It was better than pacing her rooms and feeling like a fox that was cornered by the hounds. The library was probably the lightest room in the entire castle. Windows covered the entire southern end of the room and went straight to what should have been the ceiling, only to exceed it with a clerestory. As if in deference to the books, all the shelves faced away from the windows to preserve the jackets. It was quite the thing to do in the Scottish climate and perhaps the only way to save the books from the damp. There was something reverent about this library, and it was clear the owner didn't simply own books as a decoration.
