I woke up before the birds even began to sing. Changing into loose top and trousers, I ran outside to try and practice my magic. “Feel the ground, feel the earth around you.” Concentrating on everything that Azure told me yesterday I tried to conjure up my magic once again. To my disappointment nothing but steam come from my palms. “Why is nothing happening? I’m doing everything that Azure told me to do but yet nothing is happening” I mentally thought. For the past hour I tried to get my magic to work. Anything would be better than nothing, but my luck ran thin. With a huff of anger, I balled my hands into a fist and screamed into the air, with my eyes firmly closed. I was annoyed, why couldn’t I do it, if I’m to protect my people I need to be able to conjure up something. When I had no more air left in my lungs, I swung my head low and let out a few silent tears. Wiping my tears, I finally raised my head but I wasn’t prepared on what I was about to see. The old oak trees that were once in front of me had been pushed over to with so much force they had been snapped clean off and the row of oak trees behind them had been split in half. I spun my head to see my surroundings and realised that any shrubbery close by and been wiped clean away off from their roots. How had this happened? What did I do differently?
“Well done Eleanor, however you need to be able to control your emotions so your magic isn’t out of control” I turned around and saw Azure looking pleased. “So your saying my emotions control my power” “Yes they do Eleanor, the more stressed you are the less likely your powers are going to materialise as you now know.” Was he watching me for the entire time I was practising, why didn’t he help me? “Why didn’t I help you Eleanor? Easy, you wouldn’t have learnt from your mistakes” “Azure, you can read minds?” He nodded his head, which made me blush slightly, try and keep your dirty thoughts to yourself. “Maybe next time you try and summon your magic, do a little bit of meditation beforehand.” He turned away from we and walked back off towards the castle. He just left me with more questions to ask him.
Through out the rest of the day I kept trying to summon my magic but keep my emotions in check. The furthest I manged to get was making a small flower bloom, that’s it. Pathetic. So, I wondered back to the castle and towards the kitchen. I loved the smell of food that the kitchen maids made, t was making my mouth water and my tummy grumble louder by the second. “Your highness, how can I be a service to you?” Greta the head kitchen maid asked politely. “Only a small lunch that’s all Greta.” She hurried off and came back with a bowl of soup and half a loaf of bread all cut up neatly so I could dunk the bread in the soup. “This is absolutely delicious.” Greta beamed at that compliment and went about her work, ordering the other kitchen workers what to do. During my mini feast I heard a few of the girls start to talk and gossip which made my eavesdrop. So, what if it’s not what a princess does. “I heard that half a dozen of the royal guards went missing at the south end of our border.” “That’s not the first lot to go missing. Three weeks ago, the king sent out three of his best warriors to investigate the southern borders and none of them had returned.” This was all quite shocking news, why hadn’t my father told me about these disappearances. As I’m quite curious, I decided to investigate the southern borders and see if I could find anything new. When I finally finished my bowl of soup I went to go and wash it up, thanked Greta for the soup and walked towards the southern border of my father’s kingdom.
