The serpent's smile

1668 Words

The darkness came with a smile. Aria felt it before she saw it. The familiar wrongness in the air. The way the shadows seemed to thicken and breathe. She stopped running, her hand tightening on Kairos's. "Something's coming." Kairos was already shifting, his claws extending. "How many?" "Too many." Aria's fire flickered at her fingertips, weak and sputtering. "And she's with them." Selene stepped out of the darkness like she owned it. Her smile was a blade, sharp and cruel. Behind her, the monsters waited. Dozens of them. Patient. Hungry. "Well, well." Selene clasped her hands together. "The happy couple. How utterly predictable." "What do you want?" Aria demanded. Selene laughed. It was a cold sound, like breaking glass. "Is that any way to greet your savior?" "You're no savior."
