The Hand That Claimed Her

Chapter Two: The Hand That Claimed Her The world tilted… Elena didn't scream. There was no air left in her lungs. The only sound was the deep, wet crack of earth splitting open and the rattle of chains older than Blackthorn itself. That black hand shot up from the ground ,fingers as thick as tree trunks, nails like shattered cutlasses, each joint wrapped in iron that had rusted to the color of dried blood. The crimson light from her ring hit it and the chains screamed. "Down!" Lyra shouted, hurling a sphere of blue fire between Elena and the thing. The blast lit the clearing white and slammed into the wrist. The hand didn’t flinch. It kept rising. Darien moved faster than sight. One second he was ten feet away, the next he was between Elena and the rising arm, fangs bared, eyes black. He drove a silver dagger into the palm. The hand roared. The sound wasn't human. It vibrated through the stones and the mountains, through Elena’s teeth, through the ring on her finger until she thought her bones would shatter. "Get her out of here!" Darien snarled at Lyra without looking back. "Now!" Lyra grabbed Elena’s wrist ,the one with the ring. The moment their skin touched, the symbols on the pillars flared and threw both of them backward. Elena hit the dirt hard. Lyra rolled, coughed, and was instantly on her feet, staff raised. The cloaked figures were no longer watching. They had formed a circle, swords and staves pointed outward. Whatever was in the ground, it wasn't just coming for Elena. It was coming for them all. From the fissure, a second hand broke free. Then shoulders. Then a face or what was left of one. Skin stretched over bone, mouth sewn shut with thick black thread, and two empty sockets that began to fill with the same red light as Elena’s ring. "The Warden," Lyra whispered, and for the first time her voice shook. "The witches buried him here 300 years ago. He was supposed to guard the ring. Not to take it." "He’s not guarding anything," Darien said, yanking his dagger free as black ichor sprayed. "He’s hungry." The Warden’s head turned. Slowly. Deliberately. Until those glowing sockets locked on Elena. The thread across its mouth tore. And it spoke with a voice like a grave opening. *"Bearer."* Elena felt the ring pull. Not off her finger into her. Heat raced up her arm, into her chest. Visions flashed behind her eyes: a throne of bones, a sky full of blood moons, thousands of people kneeling, and in front of her. She is wearing a crown of silver and fire. She stumbled. "I don’t... I’m not—" "Yes, you are," Darien said quietly, blood on his lips from smiling. "You always were. That’s why the forest called you." "Don’t listen to him," Lyra snapped, dragging Elena up. "He wants to use you. The witches can sever the bond. We have a ritual. But we have to reach the Temple before the moonset." Above them, the Blood Moon pulsed. It was lower now, bigger, pressing down on the trees. The Warden took a step. The ground collapsed under its weight. It reached again, and this time it didn’t aim for Elena. It aimed for the pillars. One by one, it snapped them like twigs. With each pillar that fell, the red glow in the symbols dimmed... and the red glow in the Warden’s eyes got brighter. "He’s breaking the seal," Darien realized. "If all twelve fall, nothing keeps him here." "Then we run," Lyra said, and grabbed Elena’s hand again. They bolted. Through the broken circle, past cloaked figures fighting things that were crawling out of the cracks with the Warden. Swords flashed. Magic cracked. Behind them, Darien didn’t follow. He stood his ground, laughing, tearing into the shadows with inhuman speed. "Run, little queen," he called after her. "Let’s see how fast you are." The forest was a blur. Branches whipped Elena’s face. The ring burned hotter with every step, like it was trying to lead her somewhere. Back toward the Warden. Back toward the sound. They reached the edge of Ravenwood just as the twelfth pillar fell. The entire forest went silent. Then the Blood Moon cracked. A single fissure of red light split across its surface, and from that crack poured a beam straight down not onto Elena, but onto the Warden. He threw his head back and inhaled. The beam poured into him. His sewn mouth split into a grin. He was free. And he was looking at the treeline. At her. Lyra skidded to a stop at the forest border, panting. "We made it" She didn’t finish. Because the Warden raised one chained hand... and pointed directly at Elena. The ring on her finger went ice cold. And from miles away, carried on the wind, Elena heard it clearly. Not a roar. Not a scream. Her name. Said once. Patient. *"Elena."* The trees behind them began to bend, as if something massive was walking through them. Lyra paled. "He’s tracking the ring. We have hours. Maybe less." From the darkness behind Lyra, another voice answered. Soft. Amused. "Less." Darien stepped out from the trees, unhurried, wiping blood from his jaw. His eyes weren’t on Lyra. They were on Elena’s hand. "The witches can’t sever it," he said. "Only I can. And I’m not going to." He tilted his head, studying her like a puzzle he’d waited centuries to solve. "So here’s your choice, Elena Hart. Come with me to the castle and learn what that ring really does... or run with her to the Temple and find out why every monster in this forest just woke up to claim you." The ground trembled again. Closer this time. Elena looked at Lyra. At Darien. At the ring that now had her name glowing faintly on the band. And deep in Ravenwood, something began to walk.
