Chapter Five: What Rises
The silence broke like glass.
The river exploded upward.
Not water. Shadow. Cold, thick, and wet, it crashed over the bank and swallowed the moonlight whole. For one heartbeat Elena saw nothing, then violet light tore through the dark from her ring, and the world snapped back into focus.
The seventh chain was gone. Shattered. And in its place, the stone chamber beneath the river had cracked open.
Something was rising.
The Warden’s hand closed around Elena’s wrist first. Its fingers were wet rope and iron.
It hissed, sewn mouth stretching into something like a smile. "She knows your name."
Elena tried to pull away, but the ring was burning. The symbol on her palm the circle with a ring through it was now glowing on the water’s surface, huge, a sigil twenty feet across.
From below, the six arms pushed up through the crack. Bone claws scraped stone. Each time one broke the surface, the river screamed.
Lyra was already moving in "Circles!" she shouted to the three witches behind her. Their staffs slammed into the mud in unison. White light shot up, forming a triangle around Elena, Lyra, and the Warden.
"That won’t hold her!" Darien barked. He was on his feet, between Elena and the river, fangs down. Blood ran from the cut on his temple into the water. Where his blood hit the sigil, it sizzled black. "The Matron feeds on old blood. Mine. Yours. Hers."
"I’m not hers," Elena gasped. The voice was back in her head. Amused. Ancient. Too late. I’ve already chosen you._
No, she thought back, not knowing if it could hear. You don’t get to choose.
The other Elena in the reflection laughed.
The first thing to surface wasn’t the Matron.
It was hands. Dozens of them, pale and drowned, clawing up from the black water. Eyes in the shadows blinked. Mouths opened, and no sound came out. The drowned things from the stories. The ones the witches threw in as offerings 300 years ago.
"The chains weren’t just holding her," Lyra whispered, realizing it too late. "They were holding them."
One of the drowned grabbed a witch’s ankle. She screamed and her staff light flickered. The circle broke.
Darien moved faster than thought. He tore the drowned thing off her and threw it back into the river. "Stay behind me!" he told Elena, but she was already standing.
Because the Matron’s face had breached the surface.
No eyes. No mouth. Just smooth stone. And the circle with a ring through it carved into its chest was now glowing the same violet as Elena’s ring. In sync. Like a heartbeat.
"Matron," the Warden whispered again, and this time it knelt. Not in worship. In chains. The remaining six chains around its own wrists were pulling taut, as if it was being dragged down with her.
The Matron tilted her head. No face, but Elena felt her being looked at. Measured.
"Bearer of my blood,"the voice echoed. In the air, in the water, in Elena’s bones. "Bind me, and you die with the witches. Break me, and we burn the world together. Or..."
The water stilled again.
"...be the third option I was never given.”
The horns from the forest sounded a third time. Closer. Torches moved between the trees. The High Priestess and the full coven.
Lyra stepped forward, staff raised. "Elena, don’t listen. She is lying. She always lies."
Darien grabbed Elena’s other hand. His was freezing. "Then make your own truth."
The Matron’s six arms spread wide. From each claw, shadow poured out, forming shapes. A throne. A crown. A drowned city. A world with no sun.
And in the center of all of it Elena, wearing the ring, standing between vampire and witch while the world burned or drowned.
The ring pulsed once.
BIND OR BREAK flickered, then changed.
New words burned across the water.
Elena looked at Lyra. At the coven coming. At Darien, who’d lied to her but bled for her. At the Warden, who was still chained. At the Matron, who had her face.
Her throat was dry. Her heart was loud.
She lifted her hand out of the water.
The river held its breath.
