The mysterious woman

1346 Words
My first encounter in town is with Keyla. What an intriguing encounter it was. She looked so beautiful walking around the store. She was wearing jeans and a red crop top, but her long brown hair glowed in the sun and swayed while she walked. I was going to give her a helping hand when I figured what she wanted, but I barely made it before she stumbled backwards. Those big green eyes of hers made me stuned. What stuned me even more was the fact that she knew who I was. I know Blue River is a small town, but I didn't expect to be recognized after I had been away for eight years. Luke Sander introduced himself after Keyla left. "Don't waste your time with her, boy. She has a kid, but nobody knows who the father is. She seems to have a lot of spare time but never lacks money. Nobody knows what she does for a living, and she does not care to tell anyone about it. I thinks she either does something illegal or something she is not proud of. Even her parents have disowned her." Luke says in a grave low voice as if it is a secret. I don't get why he is talking so low because we are the only ones in the store. I bet this are rumors and not secrets since he is sharing them with me right after meeting me. I have lived in a big city for eight years. A baby outside of marriage does not scare me and the mystery around her work situation intrigues me. She does not look like someone who sells her body for a living and she seems to proud to do something illegal. I by what I need before I head home to my mom and dad. After catching up with them and having lunch with them, I take a walk around town. I am used to living alone, so a little breathing room is needed. As I walk by the cafe, three elderly women stop me. "Hi, you must be William Bane" The woman on the left begins. Before I can answer the next woman says "You look andsome, are you married? I can't see a ring, that is good! I know just the girl for you! Lizzy would fit so good with you." "No, he should go out with Beth, she has traveled a lot so they would have something in comon." The last woman on the bench said. Before they can set me up on any date I hurry up and say: "Nice meeting you all, but i need to go." I walk away as fast as I can. When I don't see the crazy elderly women anymore, I turn around. I am at the side of the park. I can see Keyla standing in the middle of the park smiling at a little girl that is playing around. Keyla looks radiant as her whole face light up as she talkes to the girl. Suddenly her phone starts to call. I am close enough to hear what she is saying, though I don't think she knows I am here. "Hi Amanda!" She says and walks a little further from the playground, but still keeps her eyes on the child. "No we are in the park. Sure! I take a look at it when I get home." She is silent and I guess Amanda is talking to her. Suddenly she laughs and says: "You will never guess who I saw today! Your ex!" She frownes before she continues :"From high school... Mr. Bane!" she lookes annoyed. Guess Amanda does not remember me that well. I think back on my ex from high school and figures she is talking to Amanda Goodwill. She was the same year as me, how do they know each other? Seems like they are good friends by the way Keyla is talking to her. Keyla's back straightened all of a sudden. I wonder if she spotted me. "I got to go, the sheriff is coming. He still can't take no for an answer! What a creep! Got to go, love you!" Keyla makes a motion to Melody and she comes running to her mom. When the sheriff comes closer to them she says loudly to Melody: "Time to go home and eat some dinner! Bet you are starting to get really hungry by now." Melody plays along "Yes mommy! I am starving after playing so much. Can we please go home now?" The sheriff is young, probably a year younger than me. He is kind of skinny and the uniform is a little big for him. His blond hair is gelled backwards and does not move at all as he walk. He blocks the way for Keyla and ignores what she and her daughter was saying. "I have something I want to talk to you about" He says as he looks at Keyla. Keyla laughs loudly, probably to ease Melody, who looks really uncomfortable. "Am I in trouble, sheriff?" She asks with a big smile that is a bit forced. I start to move towards them. I do not like how this is going. "No, of course not! I just wanted to know if you are going to Mandy's barbecue on Saturday?" the sheriff said with a knowingly smile on his face. I see Keylas back stiffen, but her face does not reveal anything. "Sorry, me and mommy have plans on Saturday. We were going to tell Mandy the next time we saw her" The brilliant child uttered. That makes me smile for some reason. I interrupt them before he has a chance to reply: "Hey Keyla! Fancy meeting you again. This most be your lovely child." I say before I hunch down on her level. "Nice to meet you miss!" I say. That makes Melody laugh. "My name is Melody and you most be my knight" she says while jumping up and down. "I don't know about a knight but my name is William. It is nice to meet you princess" I say. That makes Melody squel in happiness. I see a real smile on Keyla's face before I turn to the sheriff. The sheriff looks me up and down as if he tries to find a reason to arrest me: "So you're back in town now. How long are you staying Mr. Bane?" It still rattles me that everyone around here knows my name and I don't know half of them. "Hi! I am sorry sheriff, I don't remember your name. I am here on vecation while I figure out my next project" That seems to have gotten Keyla's interest. Her green eyes studies me and she turned her body a little toward mine. "Sorry, I forget that you don't know us as well as your parents does! My name is Mike. Maybe we can go out some other time then Keyla. I will be in touch" He says with a smile and walks away before Keyla can respond. She looks annoyed at him before she turns to me. "Thank you, Mr. Bane! Nice of you to save us from him" She says and smiles at me knowingly. "Yes, you are our knight in a not so shiny armor" Melody says and looks at my clothes. "Yes, I left my shiny armor at home because it keeps blinding people on sunny days like this." I replied, playing along with her fantasy. Melody looks at me with big eyes as if she believes me and Keyla work hard not to laugh out loud. "Time to go home, honey!" Keyla says to Melody. For some reason I really want to go with them. "Thanks again, Mr. Bane! Have a nice day." Keyla says to me as she ushers Melody to her car. I just wave goodbye as Melody is the only one still looking at me. I walk back home to my parents. Funny thing though, when I get home my mom points out Keylas house a bit further down the rode.
