I settle into a cozy spot next to Jules as she pours me a steaming cup of tea, the aroma wrapping around me as I breathe in deeply. The laughter that fills the room is infectious, and I can’t help but soak it up, I never really had a group of friends and this feels really nice.
Soren, has an easy charm and is an animated storyteller as he recounts their wild adventures chasing tornadoes in Kansas resently. “You wouldn’t believe it! We were out there, watching this massive funnel cloud form, and Zac…” he pauses for dramatic effect, “decides it’s the perfect moment to try and impress the viewers. He ends up slipping in the mud and landing right on his face… in a pile of cow dung.”
The room erupts into laughter, and I can’t help but join in, picturing Zac covered in mud and cow dung, his confident demeanor crumbling in an instant.
“Hey, I was just testing the ground for stability!” Zac retorts, his cheeks flushed, but the glint in his eyes shows he’s enjoying the banter just as much as we are. “And I saved your butt later when that storm turned nasty, didn’t I?”
“Sure, sure,” Soren chuckles, waving a hand dismissively. “But the real hero of the stream was Jules, who stood there laughing while you were flailing around!”
Jules rolls her eyes playfully. “Of course, I was laughing! It’s not every day you get to see this one make a fool of himself. It was the highlight of my summer.”
As they share more stories, I feel a warmth spreading through me. They tease each other, their camaraderie evident in the way they finish one another’s sentences, and I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of belonging. Here, in this cabin, surrounded by this ragtag team of storm chasers, I feel at home.
“Are you staying for dinner?” Soren asks, glancing at me with a hopeful expression. “I’m making my famous lasagna, and you have to try it. It’s legendary.”
I glance at Zac, who gives me a small nod, a hint of encouragement in his eyes. “I’d love to,” I reply, my heart fluttering with excitement.
“Perfect!” Soren claps his hands together. “This is going to be epic. Just wait until you taste my secret sauce.”
“Sounds amazing,” I say, my stomach rumbling at the thought.
Zandra yawns, stretching her arms above her head. “I’m going to take a little rest before dinner,” she announces, glancing around the room. “I’m wiped out.”
Zac stands up abruptly, the warmth in his demeanor shifting slightly. “I’ll help you,” he says, moving to her side. I watch, surprised, as he effortlessly lifts her into his arms, cradling her gently as he carries her out of the living room.
“Oh,” I murmur, taken aback by the sight.. I had not expected that. There’s something tender about the way he handles her, protective yet easy.
Jules glances at me, a flicker of understanding in her eyes. “Zandra is paralyzed,” she says softly.
The room falls into a hush, and I can feel the weight of the revelation hanging in the air. “What happened?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
Everyone exchanges glances, a silent agreement passing between them. Skip finally breaks the silence, his expression somber. “It was a tornado when they were kids,” he says quietly. “They were caught in it. Zac did everything he could to protect her, but…” His voice trails off, and I can see the pain in his eyes.
I nod slowly, understanding the unspoken boundaries. “I’m so sorry,” I say, my heart aching for them.
“It’s a tough topic for Zac,” Jules adds gently. “He’s protective of her, and it’s still a lot to process even now.”
I can see that the atmosphere has shifted, and I want to bring back the lightness we had just moments before. “Well, it sounds like he’s a great brother,” I say, trying to lighten the mood. I wonder if this is why he is doing what he does now.
Jules laughs softly, the tension easing a bit. “Oh, he is. He’d do anything for her. It’s sweet, really.”
I smile, feeling the connection between the siblings, even through the hardships. “It’s nice to see that kind of bond.”
“Yeah, it is,” Skip agrees, nodding. “And it’s a big reason we all stick together. We’ve been through a lot, and it makes everything else feel trivial.”
The conversation shifts back to lighter topics… stories about their storm-chasing misadventures and the bizarre places they’ve ended up. I find myself hanging on every word, laughing along with them, the warmth of camaraderie wrapping around me.
I would love to know more about Zac, what happened and if the accident pack then is the reason he so badly want to safe people now. But I can’t really ask him, I just have to hope that maybe he will tell me at some point.
