Gust, an orphan, at 18 left “shelter” with good grades that got him into one of the top universities. His days were nothing out of the ordinary. But he would often get lost in his thoughts where he dreamt of a different world. A world seemingly impossible to exist yet to gust it felt too real to be a dream. He would often take out his sketchpad to draw and begin etching whatever he could recollect from those hazy visions. One peculiarity Gust felt while having these dreams was this parallel universe seemed to welcome Gust as if he was their lost someone.
He daydreaming made a joke out of him in the world he was living in. Especially after rejecting josh, gust was Josh’s new found plaything. Josh and his group bothered and humiliated Gust whenever they could. Gust was not weak. In fact he was tall, had broad shoulders and a slim built. But compared to Josh his strengths were nothing. His salty retorts to Josh surprised every bystander and accomplice. Anger would overwhelm Josh and he would revenge after classes were over with his cheap tricks.
Josh had been tailing Gust for a couple of days. He wanted him out of his life in any way possible. If not dead then maybe in jail, thought Josh to himself. He was a sadist. For his pleasure he could go to any means. That is why after classes were over they followed Gust. When they noticed gust had figured out they started chasing him and cornered him in an empty lane.
Josh succeeded in carrying out his well laid plain.
“Well Dis-Gust it is time for you to say good bye to this world and go where you belong”
They started hitting Gust and blindfolded him and covered his face. After thrashing him to his heart’s content Josh threw Gust’s unconscious body inside a truck. Josh wanted to slit his throat but was reminded that this might get him into trouble. So he made a scar down his left eye. They hit the gas on auto and left him to die.
(End of Flashback)
“Not the darkness again”. Gust groaned in pain.
He had no idea where he was heading. He could only hear the sound of the engine barking. Darkness his paralyzed his mobility and thoughts. Gust had nyctophobia. A second in darkness to him was eternity. His anxiety was starting to kick back in. he knew he had to stay calm to find a way out to stay alive. But his body would not listen to him.
Gust felt helpless. His heart was beating loud enough for him to hear. He had lost all his hope. He resorted to his last way, praying- to God, something he never did because God to him did not exist.
Just then he saw faint yellow light entering from the cracks of the wooden trunk he was in.
This light sparkled will in him. He realized that the truck was passing by a tunnel.
Canning city has two tunnels one towards the north of the city which connects to river Lan and other at the south end connecting it to the neighbouring city. Gust thought
Is it north? No, north tunnel is not a big one. I might have been in shock but I am sure the truck passed through the south end tunnel. In any case I don’t know where I am heading.
I need to get out of here as soon as possible.
He scoured the room in search of any sharp object to untie himself. Luckily he found a rusty knife. Gust did not have much time left. He tries to free his grip as fast he could but the knife being rusty took a couple of minutes. Next he used his chair to break open the wooden cage. There was a c***k already on the right side of the wall. Focusing on that weak spot Gust continuously hit it. Eventually, he smashed open the c***k. He saw there was a narrow railing and he crawled towards it. He climbed up to the top of the truck to get a good view. The road was in the middle of nowhere. There was forest on both sides. The only way to survive was to jump. It was risky because the truck was at its highest speed. He could not go to the driver’s seat because it was locked.
On the count of ten. Yes. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, fiv—
Gust lost his focus when he found a glaring light engulfing him entirely. He shut his eyes for he felt he was turning blind.
Then the truck suddenly crashed against a wall.
With thundering bang the truck exploded and Gust’s body flew three feet away.
Needless to say he was covered with third degree burns. The shock and pain started spreading throughout his body.
So..th-is is ha-ow I d-ie?
Gust whispered to himself.
His eyelids were becoming heavy. Staying conscious felt like being the most difficult work.
He succumbed and was ready to greet Death.
