The God Who Loved Too Loudly

870 Words
The night had fallen heavily over, not as a gentle blanket. It pressed down like wet velvet with insistent stormwater, and even the stars themselves seemed to blink slower. Eli sat down on the riverside, skies rolled to the elbows, fingers trailed in the cold, silver-lit stream. The world had changed again. The Keeper was gone. Kael's wound had stabilized. Amon hadn't spoken since. Something fragile had been preserved. More dangerously, something else had been opened up. A sound behind Eli that was soft. He did not turn. "I thought you were asleep," he said. Kael walked forward, his shirt disheveled, bloodstained bandage glowing faintly beneath the fabric. "I thought you were gone." "I almost was," Eli whispered. Kael sat on the side of his body. Not close. Not far. Just tight enough for the tension to live between them. "You should be resting," Eli added. Kael offered a lopsided smile in return. "So should you." Silence enveloped them. Until Kael asked, "Do you know why I let you forget?" No answer came from Eli. Kael continued. "Because you never chose me. In all the lifetimes. Not once. I thought maybe if you started fresh... you'd find your way to me." "That's not fair," Eli said quietly. "No," Kael said. "But it's honest." The First Kiss That Was Never Meant to Happen Eli turned to him. "You're wrong." Kael furrowed his brow. "About what?" Eli's voice trembled. "I did choose you. Once. Just once. Before they erased it. You kissed me on the battlefield before I fell. You called me yours. And I believed you." Kael's eyes shone brimming with the weight of memory. "You remembered that?" he whispered, almost breathless. Eli nodded. "I do remember everything now. And I remember what it meant." Kael leaned forward slowly, like someone reaching out to a ghost. Eli didn't stop him. Their lips touched. Not desperate. Not fiery. But deep. Slow. Full of aches never spoken aloud. Kael's fingers slid to Eli's neck. Eli's breath shuddered. It was wrong. It was everything. Interrupted by Fire Then, suddenly, the trees behind them exploded into flame, Amon. Him stood still but half his wings unfurled beneath the archway of the trees, trembling not in rage but pain. His eyes were not red this time. But glassy. As if someone had stabbed him in the heart. "You kissed him," Amon whispered. Eli straightened. "It wasn't like—" "No?" Amon asked, his voice rising. "You held him. You let him touch you. And I felt it. I felt it all. Because our bond-no matter how many lives-we've lived never stopped." So did Kael. "Amon, don't do this—" But Amon's voice shatters. "I gave you my light, Eli. I gave you my soul. I chose you even when the gods cursed me. And you-" "I love you," Eli interrupted. "I still do." Amon's chest heaved. "Then why did you kiss him?" Eli whispered, "Because I love him too." The Firestorm Inside Amon turned away with his fists clenched. "You think love is enough?" he spat. "That the world will let us all survive this just because you can't choose?" "No," Eli said. "I think love is the only reason we might." He closed his steps and stood before Amon with a hand on his chest. "Don't make me lose you again," Eli whispered. "Not over a kiss." Amon looked at him then. His voice cracked. "Then don't let it happen again." And he vanished-both into smoke and wind. Elsewhere, a New Enemy Rises Far from the forest, deep beneath the ruins of the divine city, something stirred. A tomb cracked open. From it, a figure emerged-bare-chested, golden-eyed, with a halo made of teeth. A fallen archon-once the protector of divine love. Now twisted with betrayal over millennia. He lifted a single scroll from the tomb floor. On it, only one name: ELI. He smiled, cruelly. "They broke the oath." He raised his hands. And across the land, all beings with divine blood felt it- The binding laws were no longer binding. A god could now kill a god. Back at the Cottage Kael sat slumped in the doorway, blood crusted still at his side, watching Eli pace. "He's going to come back," Kael said softly. Eli shook his head. "He shouldn't have to forgive me." "You're not betraying him, Eli," Kael added, keeping a hand on Eli's shoulder. "You were merely remembering love, and so was I." Eli looked up. It was the first time-in that moment-he realized something horrifying. "I don't think the gods want me to choose," Eli said. Kael blinked. "What do you mean?" "I think they want me to love you both… so that they can punish all three of us again." Ending Hook: What Comes Next Come the next morning, Amon returns with a warning: "Something older than the gods has risen. He calls himself the Archon of Ruin. And he wants your heart, Eli-not to love... but to wear." Let me know if you want Chapter Two next: "He Wears My Heart Like a Weapon." Amon's bond begins to fracture. Kael recalls the first war of gods. Eli faces the Archon in a dream... and wakes up marked.
