In the bustling atmosphere of the school cafeteria, Susan and Enzo, balancing trays in hand, made their way to join Jess, who sat alone, her eyes scanning the room in search of Hunter. It seemed he was fully committed to their “going our separate ways” agreement.
“You’ve got some explaining to do, Jess. What on earth happened to you?” Susan inquired, her curiosity piqued.
Jess glanced between them, grappling with how to articulate the tumultuous events without sounding utterly unbelievable. With a heavy sigh, she began, “I was abducted by the man my mother sold me to, and Hunter came to my rescue.”
“How?” Enzo interjected, his disappointment evident in his tone.
