chapter four

I couldn’t stay any longer. I excused myself and stood up to leave. "My son, your future husband, will drop you off," he said, a smug smile lingering on his face. "I'm sorry, but I’ll have to decline," I responded, keeping my voice steady. Without another word, I turned and walked away. I heard my stepmom calling after me, but before she could catch up, I was already gone. 3rd party POV Marvis collapsed onto her bed as soon as she got home. She just needed to clear her mind after everything that had happened that day. Now, she remembered the smirk from the handsome man at the elavator —it suddenly made sense. It was eerily familiar, just like the one the big boss had. The same man who had walked out on her, the one who called her a b***h, was soon to be her husband. She couldn’t help but cry quietly. Not even her sharp mind could save her now. She had only one option—marry him and play the role of the “b***h” he accused her of being until he asked for a divorce. Mr. Kingstone had no idea what awaited him in the months ahead. That thought alone had soothed her racing and frightened heart. She had to be strong for herself, and herself alone. Her parents had caused more harm than good in her life, and even in their deaths, she still suffered from their absence. Mr kingston's POV Saying I was devastated would be an understatement. I felt angry, sad, confused, and a bit curious. Why would my father make me believe there was theft in the company when he had actually loaned it out and betrothed me to their daughter? I couldn’t understand why he never said a word. He even made her my assistant. I was immediately suspicious of her sudden presence in the company. Dad had transferred my former assistant and brought her in. It seemed like her plan to marry me had worked out perfectly. "Greedy b***h," I muttered in frustration. I even suspected they might be sleeping together. Just thinking about how she reacted whenever my father came near made my suspicions grow. Yet, I couldn’t shake the small doubt creeping into my mind—maybe she didn’t know either. Maybe my dad surprised her just as much as he did me, still, I felt guilty for how I had lashed out at her. The look on her face haunted me, and thinking about it made me even more upset. I had only made things worse for her. I needed a way out. I don’t want to marry her, but my dad threatened me with the company. There’s only one thing I can do: make her sign a contract for the remaining years her father owes the company. It will benefit both of us. If this situation really affects her, with the marriage in place, she won’t be able to settle the loan, and my dad will drop this whole marriage nonsense, leaving me free and in control of the company. Two years should be enough to convince him that we tried to make it work. The thought left me feeling impressed with myself. "I hope this works." I needed to call her right away and set up a meeting before my dad pulled another stunt. Her phone rang twice, but she didn’t pick up. Frustrated, I forced myself to stay calm, assuming she must have fallen asleep. I left a message for her, asking to meet at my place, figuring it would be easier to talk there than at the office. After sending the message, I took a shower and went to bed. It was really had to sleep. I couldn't stop thinking about how sad she looked. Well, tomorrow we will have to agree to this contract for our sanities sake. Marvis POV I woke up this morning to a message from Mr. Kingston: "Hello Marvis, we need to meet tomorrow evening at 5. My driver will pick you up. Try not to be late. Goodnight, wifey," he ended with a winking smiley. It made me even angrier. After yesterday's insult, he still had the nerve to give orders without even apologizing. At first, I decided not to go, but I reconsidered. I wanted to know what he had to say and what he wanted. I had my own plans that he knew nothing about, and I needed to understand his so nothing would interfere with mine. Those debts had to be paid, even if it meant marrying an asshole. But I wasn’t about to promise him an easy life. He started this, and he’ll have to play along. I got up and picked out what I’d wear for the meeting. "I chose a pink floral dress that flowed to my feet but hugged my curves in all the right places. It was an open back gown that displayed my beautiful pinkish blue tattoo. As I anticipated the meeting, I kept myself busy with things around the house. Although I’m a Christian, church wasn’t on my mind. Instead, I streamed the service live, which is exactly what I did. Time flew by, and before I knew it, it was already 3:30. I started preparing—mentally, physically, and in every other way. He was an arrogant man I was attracted to, and soon to be my husband. I needed to be fully prepared." I heard a knock at my door. "Who is it?" I called out as I walked to check. Standing outside was a tall, well-built man, his outfit hugging his muscular frame. His face was completely devoid of emotion. "How may I help you?" I asked without smiling. He didn’t seem like someone who welcomed smiles, especially from strangers. "I'm here to pick you up, Miss Marvis, on orders from Mr. Kingstone," he said. I quickly realized he was Mr. Kingstone’s driver. "Okay, give me about five minutes. I’ll be out and ready to go," I replied, excusing myself into the house to grab my bags, lock up, and possibly touch up my makeup. The drive to his house was quiet, except for the soft instrumental music playing in the background. I gazed out the window, noticing parts of the city I had never seen before. I have to admit, the city was beautiful. His estate was far from where I lived, and it was clear that it catered to the top 1% of the wealthiest people. I was certain the houses were privately owned rather than rented—rent would be astronomical, and commuting to town daily would be far too expensive. You had to be truly wealthy to live here. I wasn’t sure how I fell asleep, but I was gently awakened by a soft tug on my arm. "Wake up, ma’am. We’re here," the driver said calmly. "Oh, really... okay. Sorry for sleeping so long. The drive was quite a long one," I smiled, trying to explain myself. He smiled back and gave me a nod, signaling he accepted my apology. He had a lovely smile. "Where have all these handsome men been all my life?" I thought to myself. But now, it was time to face the devil. I got out of the car and was led into the building. I nearly collapsed at the sight of the magnificent interior decor. "You can close your mouth now," he said with an amused smile, clearly entertained by my reaction to his house.
