|Javier| My thoughts immediately latched onto the most logical answer. The hospital. Of course. Where else would she be? She’d been spending so much of her time there lately, slipping in and out of those sterile halls with the kind of devotion that only love for family could fuel. Visiting her grandfather had become part of her daily rhythm, so natural it was as if the hospital itself had become a second home to her. A thin ribbon of relief uncoiled inside me at the thought, steadying my nerves. But the relief was tangled with a quiet pang of disappointment. The reunion I had pictured—the smile, the surprise in her eyes, the way I had hoped she might fold herself into my arms—would have to wait. Fine.
