Mia
"Here you go," I say to the lady as I hand over her takeaway order.
I look at the clock hanging on the opposite wall. Five fifty five, five minutes to closing.
I go to the restroom to change out of my uniform.
With the cafe empty now, I pick up my phone to check for new messages. It's been two weeks since my last interview, but they had not yet gotten back to me.
Given that I had no previous experience in that post, combined with all the previous rejections I'd had, I was already losing hope.
I sigh. I was barely making enough to pay rent, not to mention the pilling bills. I couldn't even help my junior sister—Hailey, and mom with expenses back home in Louisiana.
My life really sucks.
I open my inbox and click on an email that'd gotten in a few hours ago.
"Hello, Miss Mia Hathaway, This email is to inform you that you passed the interview for the position of CEO Executive Assistant at 4U Luxe…"
"Ahhhh!!! Oh. My. God!" I screamed.
Earning me stares from Harry, our Barista.
"Care to share the good news?" he asked.
"I passed my last interview. Finally after so many rejections." I was practically jumping and giggling like a kid but I didn't care.
"Ohh, wow! Congrats. You're finally getting out of here. You've wanted this for such a long time. Don't forget to pass by once in a while." He says.
"Of course. Thanks, and good luck too, don't give up." I say as I grab my things to leave. He'd told me he had plans of opening his own restaurant. He was thirty six and still had time to live his dream.
"Thanks. Good luck with your new job."
"Thanks again, see you around." I say as I walk out the door.
As I leave, I think about how far I'd come. I'd worked here for the past ten months and now here was I, leaving never to return.

"I am so proud of you honey. You work so hard, you deserve this." I could hear my mom getting teary on the other side of the line.
"Thank you mom. After all the rejections, I finally succeeded." I sniff. I was getting teary too.
"Look at us, we're like cry babies." She laughs.
"Yeah," I wipe a tear that had slid down my face.
"This is just the beginning of good things honey. Again, I am so proud of you. Good luck for your first day. You'll be just fine, okay?"
"Thanks mom. Hope you and Hailey are doing okay" I ask.
"Of course we are, don't worry about us. Hailey's here, she wants to talk to you."
I hear her passing the phone.
"Hello Mia. Mommy said you got a new job as an assistant to the CEO!. Congratulations! Mia." Hearing my ten year old sister giggling and happy made me smile.
"Hii baby girl. Yes I did. Thank you! How have you been?"
"I am fine. Will you be here for Christmas? We miss you."
"Of course, I'll be there. Take care and study hard, ok? Love you, bye."
"Okay, byeee Mia, love you too."
I hang up. I look at the long c***k across my screen. At least now I could spare some money to replace it.
Well, I didn't have many friends here. If I still had a best friend, I would've called to announce the good news but I'd cut ties with her after I found out my ex from College had been cheating with my so-called best friend during our three years together.
Since I moved here, I haven't been in any relationship. I was too busy trying to find work and still healing from my past relationship.
My stomach grumbles. It was seven thirty and I'd not yet had dinner. I go to the kitchen to heat leftover chicken pasta for dinner.
After eating, I decide on watching a movie on Netflix on my laptop. I am halfway through the movie snacking on Pringles, when Ella enters my room.
"See who just got a new job!!." She sits on the bed next to me.
"Congrats gurll," She hugs me.
"Thanks. Remember how I had a horrible day that day. At least my bad luck finally gave way to something good." I hug her back.
"Yeah, totally. You worked so freaking hard. You definitely deserve this."
I laugh. "My mom said the same thing."
"That's because it's true."
"Thanks so much."
"What's that?" I ask, eyeing the bag she's carrying.
"We're celebrating of course." She takes out a bottle of Tequila. "This is not just any job Mia. We're talking about CEO Executive Assistant! Common we gotta toast to this."
"Ok ok, alright" I giggle. Just so Ella. She never passes up on an opportunity to get wasted. "It's weekend, and I don't have to do deliveries anymore." I say.
"I also don't have work tomorrow." She adds. "So when do you start?"
"Monday. Honestly, I am nervous. I don't have experience in this position before. What if I get fired after a week or something?"
She pinches my jaw. "Mia! Can you please not be so pessimistic? They have your CV and you passed the interview. If they decided to hire you, it means they believe you're up to the task. So it's up to you to prove it to them. Got it?"
"Yeah, yeah let go." I rub my jaw. "That hurt you know."
"Yeah well, you needed to snap out of it. You're always making up the worst case scenario in every situation."
"Okay fine, no more negative talks."
She gets up to leave. "Now you're talking. I'll be right back."
At twenty-six, Ella is two years older than me and is a Social Media Manager. There were times when I was back on rent, she would help me out.
When she gets back, she's in her pyjamas with two glasses. She fills both glasses and hands me one.
She lifts hers. "Cheers to a new chapter of your life, Mia."
"Cheers."
