chapter 2: the man who doesn't chase

730 Words
Bella didn’t sleep well that night. Leo Kingsley’s voice kept replaying in her mind. You don’t belong in this world. It should have annoyed her. Instead, it unsettled her in a way she didn’t understand. The next morning, campus felt normal again—students rushing to lectures, coffee cups in hand, backpacks swinging. “Girl, you were basically stared at by royalty last night,” Jessica teased as they walked toward class. “I was just at a party,” Bella said. “Not just any party,” Olivia added. “Leo Kingsley’s party.” Bella rolled her eyes but stayed quiet. Across campus, whispers were already spreading. Leo Kingsley had spoken to someone new. And that someone was Bella Carter. Later that afternoon, Bella went to the library to escape the noise. She found her usual table near the back, the one between two tall shelves where no one usually bothered her. She had barely opened her laptop when a familiar voice interrupted her thoughts. “You always study like that?” Bella looked up. James. He stood there calmly, hands in his pockets, looking as composed as ever. “I mean… focused,” he added with a small smile. Bella sighed lightly. “I have to. Unlike some people, I don’t have unlimited money to fall back on.” James sat across from her without asking again. “I don’t either,” he said. Bella paused. “You’re joking.” “I’m not,” James replied. “I built my company from nothing.” That surprised her. She had assumed people like him just existed in a different world entirely. “What kind of company?” she asked. “Tech. Mostly software systems and security infrastructure.” Bella blinked. “That sounds… expensive.” “It is,” he said simply. “But it didn’t start that way.” There was something grounding about James. No arrogance. No pressure. Just quiet confidence. Unlike Leo. Bella hesitated before asking, “Do you know Leo Kingsley?” At the name, James’s expression changed slightly. Not anger. Not surprise. Something more controlled. “Yes,” he said. A pause. “He’s… hard to avoid.” Bella noticed the way he said it. Careful. Measured. Like someone choosing not to say too much. “Why?” she asked. James looked at her for a moment longer than necessary. “Because people like him don’t stay in the background.” Before Bella could respond, her phone buzzed. A notification. Campus gossip page. LEO KINGSLEY SPOTTED TALKING TO MYSTERIOUS STUDENT AT PARTY. Her stomach dropped. James glanced at the screen. “You’re already trending,” he said calmly. “I didn’t do anything,” Bella said quickly. “I know.” That was all he said. But the way he said it made her feel… defended. Meanwhile, across the city, Leo Kingsley stood in a glass office overlooking the skyline. Daniel Harris leaned against the desk. “You scared her a little,” Daniel said. Leo didn’t look away from the window. “She didn’t look scared.” “She looked confused,” Daniel corrected. Leo finally turned. “That’s different.” Daniel smirked. “You’re interested.” Leo didn’t deny it. Instead, he picked up his phone. On the screen was a single image. Bella Carter. Taken at the party. “Find out everything about her,” Leo said. Daniel raised an eyebrow. “That’s it?” Leo’s gaze stayed on the photo. “That’s enough.” Back at the library, James closed his laptop. “You should be careful,” he said. Bella frowned. “Careful about what?” James looked at her directly now. “People like Leo don’t just notice someone for no reason.” Bella felt a small chill. “And people like you?” she asked. James paused. Then, quietly: “We don’t notice easily. But when we do… it usually matters.” Before she could respond, he stood up. “I have to go.” Bella watched him leave, confused by the sudden tension she couldn’t explain. Two completely different men. Two completely different worlds. And somehow, she had stepped into both. Outside, the campus buzz continued. But Bella suddenly felt like her life was no longer quiet. It was beginning to split in two directions. And she didn’t yet know which one would break her first.
