While we were still trying to adjust ourselves to the harsh reality of Ama’s death, our President announced a major reshuffle of her government. The Ministries of Education and Culture were merged. Shortly after her appointment the new Minister announced a National Festival of the Arts for Schools. There were several categories including short stories, poetry, drama, music and dance, painting and sculpture, and oratory. She instructed every secondary school to appoint a coordinator. Talent spotting would start within each school and then proceed through competitions at district and regional levels to a major festival at the National Theatre in Accra. At assembly our headmistress announced that she had appointed Miss Mensah as our coordinator.
