The scent of espresso and toasted sourdough did not belong in a werewolf pack, which was precisely why Ava loved it.
For five years, the human city of Blackwood had been her sanctuary. Located three hundred miles from Crescent Moon territory, it was a sprawling maze of neon, concrete, and millions of humans who remained blissfully unaware of the monsters lurking in the surrounding forests. Here, Ava was not an unranked orphan or a rejected mate. She was just Ava a hardworking cafe manager, a loyal friend, and a fiercely protective mother.
"Mommy, look! The wolf in my book has eyes like mine!"
Ava turned from the espresso machine, wiping her hands on her apron. Sitting at the corner table, surrounded by colored pencils, was five year old Leo. He pointed a chubby finger at an illustration in a children's fairytale book.
When he looked up at her, Ava’s breath hit a familiar, lingering hitch.
Leo was the spitting image of his father. He had Damon’s pitch black hair and sharp, high cheekbones. But it was his eyes that made Ava’s pulse spike every time she looked too closely. While normal wolves possessed golden or amber eyes when their inner beast stirred, Leo’s iris flashed a brilliant, unmistakable metallic silver the legendary mark of the Supreme Lycan bloodline.
"It sure does, baby," Ava said softly, walking over to ruffle his dark curls. "Keep your voice down, okay? Remember our rule."
"Never flash the silver eyes in public," Leo whispered back dutifully, pressing his small lips together in a serious line.
"Good boy." She kissed the top of his head, drawing comfort from his warm, milk-and-honey scent.
When Ava had stumbled out of Crescent Moon territory five years ago, broken and bleeding from the shattered mate bond, she had expected to die in the wilderness. Instead, the ancient, dormant power hidden within her own bloodline had awakened to protect her unborn child. She had survived the harsh winter, made her way to Blackwood, and built a life from absolute zero.
She had worked three jobs, saved every cent, and eventually secured a partnership in the very cafe she started in as a dishwasher. She had built a fortress around her son, far out of reach of pack politics and Alpha egos.
The chime above the cafe door rang, breaking her train of thought.
Marcus walked in, shaking the light rain from his leather jacket. As the Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack a progressive, modern pack that coexisted quietly alongside the human city Marcus had been Ava’s silent guardian for the past three years. He was broad shouldered, warm eyed, and treated Leo like his own nephew.
"Morning, Ava," Marcus said, his deep voice carrying a tone of mild concern as he approached the counter. "Hey there, little man."
"Uncle Marcus!" Leo beamed, holding up his drawing.
Marcus smiled at the boy, but as soon as Leo turned back to his coloring book, the Alpha’s expression darkened. He leaned over the counter, lowering his voice so only Ava’s enhanced hearing could pick it up.
"We have a problem," Marcus murmured. "The Crescent Moon Pack is hosting the regional Alpha Summit this weekend."
Ava’s hand froze on the coffee tamper. The name alone sent a cold, phantom ache through her chest, a ghost of the pain from five years ago.
"The Summit is always held in the neutral territory up north," Ava said, forcing her voice to remain steady. "Why change it now?"
"Damon Knight," Marcus replied, his eyes searching her face. "He’s consolidated power across the entire eastern region. His pack has doubled in size, and he’s aggressively expanding his borders. He demanded the Summit be held on his home turf to display his dominance. Every regional Alpha is required to attend including me."
Ava felt the blood drain from her face. "You're going to Crescent Moon?"
"I have to. If I don't show up, Damon will take it as an act of defiance and target the Bloodmoon territory." Marcus hesitated, looking over at Leo. "Ava... Damon isn't just expanding his borders. Word on the wire is that he’s looking for something. Or someone. He’s had scouts searching the surrounding human cities for months."
A lump formed in Ava's throat. "He rejected me. He banished me on pain of death. Why would he be searching?"
"Because a pack without an heir is vulnerable," Marcus said gently. "Damon married Lady Freya four years ago, but the rumors say the union is cursed. She hasn't produced an heir. The elders are getting restless, and Damon’s control is slipping under the pressure. If he ever finds out you survived... if he finds out about Leo..."
"He will never touch my son," Ava snapped, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. Her inner wolf, once a wounded, weeping thing, snarled deep within her chest.
"I know you’re strong, Ava," Marcus warned softly. "But Damon is stronger than he was five years ago. He’s ruthless. You need to take Leo and leave Blackwood for a few weeks until the Summit passes. Lie low."
Ava looked back at Leo, who was happily humming a tune while drawing a crown over the wolf in his book.
For five years, she had run. She had hidden in the shadows, terrified that the big, bad Alpha would find out she had carried his bloodline away in the night. But she wasn't that fragile girl on her knees in broken glass anymore. She had built a life. She had built power of her own.
"I'm not running again, Marcus," Ava said, her dark eyes locking onto his with fierce determination. "This is our home. Let Damon play his political games in his castle. As long as he stays on his side of the border, he lives his life, and I live mine."
Marcus sighed, seeing the unwavering steel in her posture. He knew better than to argue when Ava made up her mind. "Alright. But I’m leaving two of my best enforcers posted outside the cafe until I return from the Summit."
"Thank you," she said quietly.
As Marcus walked out, Ava leaned against the counter, her mind racing. She reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing against the heavy golden locket she always kept hidden. Inside was a tiny photograph of the day Leo was born.
She stared out the window into the rain. Somewhere three hundred miles away, the man who had torn her heart out was preparing to host the world's most powerful wolves. He thought he had destroyed her. He thought he had erased her from his legacy.
Ava tightened her fist around the locket.
Let him look, she thought, her eyes flashing a faint, lethal amber in the reflection of the glass. If Damon Knight ever comes for my son, he'll realize the mate he rejected was the biggest mistake of his life.
