The rain in Blackwood didn’t fall in gentle showers; it slicked the asphalt, blurred the neon signs, and washed away the scents of the city.
For Ava, the downpour was a blessing. Heavy rain muted supernatural senses, making it harder for tracking wolves to isolate a specific aura amidst the dense urban landscape.
Inside her cafe, The Daily Grind, the late afternoon rush had cleared out. Ava wiped down the polished wooden counters, her movements smooth and practiced, though every nerve ending in her body was coiled tight. Through the wide front windows, she kept a vigilant eye on the street.
Outside, parked across the street near a dimly lit alley, sat a plain black sedan. Inside were two of Marcus’s Bloodmoon enforcers. They had been stationed there for two days, acting as a discreet shield. But Ava knew that if Damon was as desperate as Marcus believed, two guards wouldn't be enough to stop what was coming.
"Mommy, look! I made a fortress!"
Ava turned, her expression instantly softening as she looked toward the corner table. Leo had constructed an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks and sugar packets. His dark curls tumbled over his forehead, and when he grinned up at her, those striking silver irises caught the warm overhead light.
"That's a very strong fortress, sweet boy," Ava said, walking over and kneeling beside his chair. She gently tucked a stray curl behind his ear. "Are the walls high enough to keep the bad guys out?"
"Yep!" Leo puffed out his chest proudly. "Nothing gets past my castle. I’m the Alpha of the blocks!"
The word Alpha made Ava’s heart clench with a familiar, sharp pang. Leo had no idea what the word truly meant in the world beyond Blackwood. To him, it was just a word from his fairytale books. She smoothed down his collar, forcing a bright smile.
"You certainly are," she whispered. "Finish up your juice, baby. Miss Sarah is going to take you upstairs to our apartment in a few minutes while I close the shop."
Before Leo could respond, the gentle chime above the cafe door rang.
Ava stood up instantly, her body subtly shifting into a defensive posture, her inner wolf surging to the surface. But it wasn't a threat. Alpha Marcus stepped inside, shaking water from his heavy wool coat. His expression was grim, his jaw set in a hard line.
"Sarah," Ava called out smoothly, keeping her voice light. "Could you take Leo upstairs to start his homework, please?"
"On it, Ava," the young human student replied from behind the counter, smiling as she walked over to gather Leo’s coloring books and blocks.
"See you upstairs, Mommy!" Leo called out, waving his chubby hand before skipping off toward the back stairs with Sarah.
As soon as the door to the upper apartment clicked shut, the warmth drained from Ava’s eyes. She turned to Marcus. "You left the Summit early."
"The Summit ended this morning," Marcus said, stepping closer and lowering his voice. "Damon formally closed the proceedings, but he didn't return to Crescent Moon Estate. Jax stayed behind to handle the pack leaders, but Damon disappeared immediately after the final vote."
Ava’s fingers tightened around the damp towel in her hand. "He’s coming here."
"Worse," Marcus replied, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "He didn't wait to send scouts. My border patrols caught three of his top trackers trying to breach the southern river line two hours ago. We turned them back, but it was a distraction. Damon crossed into Blackwood alone on foot."
A cold, heavy weight settled into the pit of Ava’s stomach. Damon was a master tracker, a Supreme Lycan whose senses were far sharper than any ordinary wolf. If he was in the city, the urban chaos of Blackwood would only delay him, not stop him.
"Why didn't you stop him at the border?" Ava asked, her voice tight with rising panic.
"I couldn't engage him directly without triggering a full-scale territorial war," Marcus explained, regret darkening his warm eyes. "If Bloodmoon and Crescent Moon go to war, the council will step in, and Blackwood will become a battleground. I came to get you and Leo. I have a safe house in the mountains”
"No," Ava cut him off, her dark eyes flashing a dangerous amber in the dim light of the cafe. "No more running, Marcus. I spent five years hiding in the shadows, waiting for the day he would track me down. If I run now, I’ll be running for the rest of Leo's life."
"Ava, he's a Supreme Alpha," Marcus urged, taking a step forward. "He's stronger, faster, and more ruthless than he was five years ago. You don't have to prove anything to him."
"I'm not proving anything to him," Ava said, her voice dropping into an unyielding, icy register. "I'm protecting my son. This city is my home. I built this life from nothing, with blood, sweat, and tears, while he sat in his fortress playing politics with Freya. If Damon Knight thinks he can walk into my world and take what's mine, he's going to find out that the weak girl he broke five years ago doesn't exist anymore."
Marcus stared at her, seeing the absolute steel in her posture. He knew that look. It was the look of a mother willing to burn the world down to keep her child safe. He let out a long, heavy breath and nodded.
"Alright," Marcus said softly. "Then Bloodmoon stands with you. I've posted four more enforcers around the perimeter of the block. If he shows his face, he won't be dealing with a rogue. He'll be dealing with an Alpha's full guard."
Ava looked out the window into the sheet of falling rain. High above the street, in the apartment over the cafe, her son was laughing.
Let him come, Ava thought, her jaw tightening as her inner wolf bared its teeth in the dark. Let him try.
