The rain hit the pavement like steady gunfire, but Damon Knight barely felt it.
He stood in the shadowed alleyway across from The Daily Grind, pulled low beneath the overhang of a brick building. He wore a dark leather jacket, his pitch black hair soaked and clinging to his forehead. For three hours, he had navigated the labyrinthine streets of Blackwood, dodging human crowds and suppressing his dominant aura to avoid alerting Marcus’s border guards.
His inner wolf, Brutus, was practically clawing through his ribs, wild and frantic.
She is close, Brutus growled in his mind, a sound of pure, unadulterated desperation. She is near. Smell it!
Damon closed his eyes and took a deep, steadying breath through his nose. He pushed past the stench of wet asphalt, gasoline, and burnt coffee, searching for the one scent that had haunted his dreams for nineteen hundred days and nights.
And then, carried on a stray gust of damp wind through the cafe's exhaust vent, he caught it.
Wild roses and warm honey.
Damon’s eyes snapped open, his irises flashing a lethal, electric amber in the darkness of the alley. His breath hitched in his throat, a sharp, agonizing phantom pain tearing through his chest where the shattered mate bond lived.
She was alive.
It wasn't a trick. It wasn't a ghost created by his guilty mind. Ava was in that cafe.
Damon took a step out of the alley, his boots splashing in a puddle, but stopped instantly. His razor sharp vision zoomed in on the four men standing at key points around the building. Two were in a parked sedan; two more were leaning casually against the brickwork of the neighboring bakery. They wore plain clothes, but the subtle, disciplined tension in their shoulders gave them away instantly.
Bloodmoon enforcers. Marcus’s elite guard.
A dark, dangerous scowl twisted Damon’s face. Marcus hadn't just known Ava was alive; he had built a fortress around her. He had lied to the council, defied the Pack Accord, and put his own territory on the line to keep Damon away from her.
Why? The question burned in Damon’s mind like fire. Why would Marcus go to such extreme lengths to protect an unranked, rejected wolf?
Damon didn't care. He was done playing diplomatic games. He stepped out of the shadow of the alley, moving with the silent, predatory grace of an apex hunter.
As he crossed the street, the two Bloodmoon enforcers outside the bakery froze. Their heads snapped toward him, their eyes widening in shock as they recognized the formidable figure advancing through the rain. They reached into their jackets, stepping forward to block the entrance of the cafe.
"Alpha Knight," one of the enforcers called out, his voice shaking slightly despite his training. "This is Bloodmoon territory. You are unauthorized”
Before the guard could finish his sentence, Damon moved.
He was a blur of dark motion. In less than a second, Damon closed the distance, grabbing the first guard by the throat and slamming him hard against the brick wall. The impact rattled the windows, knocking the breath from the warrior's lungs. Before the second guard could draw a weapon, Damon swept his leg out, sending the man crashing to the wet pavement, and pinned him down with a heavy boot to his chest.
Damon leaned down, his voice a low, terrifying baritone that vibrated with raw Alpha dominance. "If either of you moves, I will tear your throats out. Understood?"
Both guards went still, bowing their heads in immediate submission to the Supreme Alpha's power.
Damon let go of the first guard, who slid to the ground gasping for air. Without glancing back, Damon stepped up to the front door of The Daily Grind. He reached out, his hand trembling slightly as his fingers wrapped around the brass handle.
The bell above the door chimed a soft, cheerful sound that shattered the heavy tension inside the room.
Damon stepped into the warm, scented air of the cafe.
Standing behind the wooden counter, holding a heavy glass coffee pot as if it were a weapon, was Ava.
Damon froze. The world around him seemed to stop moving. The rain outside, the hum of the refrigerator, the beating of his own heart everything faded into absolute silence.
She was even more breathtaking than he remembered. Her soft, vulnerable edges had been replaced by a sharp, regal grace. Her dark hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders, and her eyes once filled with tears of betrayal now held a cold, unwavering strength that made his blood run hot.
"Ava," Damon breathed, the name ripping from his throat like a prayer. He took an involuntary step forward, his hand reaching out. "You're... you're alive."
"Stop right there, Alpha Knight," Ava said, her voice dropping like an iron bar between them. She didn't flinch. She didn't retreat. She looked at him with the cold distance of a stranger. "Take one more step, and I'll drop this pot on your head and call the human police."
Damon stopped, stunned by the sheer defiance radiating from her. Five years ago, an unranked wolf would have cowered before his aura. But Ava stood her ground, her inner wolf flashing amber in her eyes, completely rejecting his presence.
"Ava, please," Damon begged, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in half a decade. "I searched for you. I spent five years searching”
"You rejected me," she interrupted, her words slicing through his defense with clinical precision. "You banished me. You made your choice for your pack and your Luna. You have no right to stand in my shop, and you have no right to speak my name."
Before Damon could respond, before he could fall to his knees and offer every apology that had festered in his soul, a tiny voice echoed from the top of the wooden staircase in the back corner of the room.
"Mommy? Who is that man?"
Damon’s head snapped toward the stairs.
A little boy, no older than five, was standing at the railing, holding a plush wolf toy. He had pitch black curls, sharp cheekbones, and when he looked down at Damon, the warm light caught his eyes.
Damon’s heart stopped beating altogether.
The boy's irises weren't amber. They weren't brown or blue. They were a brilliant, unmistakable, metallic silver.
The mark of the Supreme Lycan line.
Damon looked from the boy to Ava, his entire body shaking as the realization hit him like a physical blow. The missing heir. The reason Marcus had shielded her. The secret she had carried away into the night.
"He's mine," Damon whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe, horror, and overwhelming realization. "Ava... he's my son."
