The silence in The Daily Grind was deafening, suffocating every lungful of air in the room.
Damon stood rooted to the spot, his tall frame trembling as his eyes stayed locked on the little boy at the top of the stairs. The metallic silver in the child’s eyes glowed with an unmistakable, ancient Lycan power a genetic mark so rare it only manifested in the trueborn bloodline of the Supreme Alpha.
His son. He had a son.
"Ava..." Damon’s voice broke, stripped of all its usual Alpha dominance. He took a single, agonizing step toward the stairs, his hand reaching upward as if trying to touch a dream. "He... he has the silver eyes."
Before he could take a second step, Ava moved.
With breathtaking speed, she bypassed the counter and placed herself directly between Damon and the staircase. Her eyes flashed a brilliant, lethal amber, her inner wolf surging to the absolute surface. She didn't flinch, didn't bow, and didn't step back.
"Leo, go back to your room and lock the door," Ava commanded, her voice dropping into an icy, non-negotiable tone that made the little boy instantly pull back.
"But Mommy”
"Now, Leo!"
The tiny footsteps scampered away, and the heavy thud of a bedroom door closing echoed through the building, followed by the quiet click of a lock.
Only then did Ava turn her full, scorching gaze back onto Damon.
"Do not look at him," she growled, her voice vibrating with a dangerous threat. "Do not speak to him. And do not step one inch closer to those stairs."
Damon looked at her, his mind spinning in a terrifying whirlpool of regret, grief, and sudden realization. Five years of cold, heirless isolation at Crescent Moon, five years of listening to the elders complain about his dying bloodline, five years of believing he had destroyed his legacy and the entire time, his trueborn heir was growing up in a human cafe, eating breakfasts and drawing fairytales three hundred miles away.
"You hid my son from me," Damon whispered, the shock slowly yielding to a wave of agonizing heartbreak. "You carried my bloodline away into the dark and let me believe..."
"I hid my son from a monster," Ava corrected seamlessly, her voice sharp as glass. "I carried my baby away from a pack that declared him worthless before he was even born. You rejected me, Damon. You stood in front of your council, looked me in the eyes, and severed our bond so you could marry Freya and secure your political power."
"I didn't know you were pregnant!" Damon roared, his chest heaving as Brutus thrashed violently against his ribs. The sheer grief in his voice cracked the heavy air in the room. "If I had known”
"If you had known, what?" Ava sneered, taking a menacing step toward him, her hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. "You would have taken him from my arms? You would have raised him in that cold, hateful estate alongside Freya while turning me into a disgraced servant? Or would your council have forced me into a back room just to act as an incubator for your precious heir?"
Damon opened his mouth to deny it, but the words caught in his throat. Five years ago, his council was ruthless. His father in law would have stopped at nothing to secure the bloodline while ensuring Ava remained powerless. Ava was right. If she had stayed, her life would have been a living hell.
"I survived the shattered bond because of him," Ava said softly, though her eyes remained hard as flint. "My wolf didn't die because she had to keep him alive. I built this life with my own hands, Damon. I don't need your title, I don't need your money, and my son does not need a father who threw his mother away like trash."
"Ava, please," Damon begged, dropping his head as a raw, physical pain tore through his chest. The mate bond, decayed and ragged, burned like liquid fire inside his veins. "I was wrong. Every single day for five years has been a punishment. I don't care about the council. I don't care about Freya. I came here for you."
"Then you came for a ghost," Ava replied cleanly.
The heavy front door of the cafe swung open again, and Alpha Marcus stepped inside, his leather jacket drenched with rain. Behind him, four Bloodmoon enforcers filled the entrance, their eyes locked on Damon with weapons drawn.
Marcus took in the scene Damon looking utterly broken at the center of the floor, Ava standing like an unyielding shield before the stairs, and the lingering scent of ancient bloodline power in the air.
"You've overstayed your welcome, Alpha Knight," Marcus said smoothly, stepping up beside Ava. "You are in Bloodmoon territory, uninvited. Leave now, or this becomes a regional conflict."
Damon slowly raised his head. His eyes, dark and filled with a terrifying, desperate fire, locked onto Marcus.
"You knew," Damon whispered, his baritone dropping into a deadly register. "You knew he was my son, and you kept him from me."
"I protected a mother and her child from a threat," Marcus replied without a single hint of fear. "Which is my duty as an Alpha. Now get out of this city."
Damon looked back at Ava. She met his gaze directly, offering zero mercy, zero weakness, and zero entry into her life.
He knew he couldn't take the boy by force not here, not like this. If he started a war in the middle of Blackwood, he would ruin any chance of ever earning a fraction of Ava's trust. He had to be strategic. He had to dismantle five years of mistakes brick by brick.
"I'm leaving," Damon said softly, his dark gaze holding Ava's. "For tonight. But understand this, Ava... I am not giving up on my family. I will tear down my entire life at Crescent Moon if I have to, but I will earn my way back to you and our son."
Without waiting for a response, Damon turned on his heel and walked out into the pouring rain, leaving the heavy chime of the cafe door ringing in the quiet night.
