The grand banquet hall of the Crescent Moon Estate was a masterclass in ancient intimidation and modern wealth. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted mahogany ceilings, casting a warm glow over polished marble floors. Dozens of powerful wolves Alphas, Betas, and high ranking pack enforcers from across the eastern region milled about in sharp suits and elegant evening gowns, their heavy, suffocating aura mingling with the scent of fine wine and seared meats.
At the center of it all stood Damon Knight, commanding the room without saying a single word.
He held a crystal glass of whiskey, his eyes tracking every movement in the hall with lethal precision. To his right, Freya played the dutiful Luna, draped in emerald silk and dripping in diamonds, smiling tightly at the visiting dignitaries. To the untrained eye, they were the ultimate power couple of the werewolf world. To the Alphas in the room, however, the subtle distance between them was an invitation.
"Alpha Knight," a booming voice called out.
Alpha Garret of the Ironfang Pack strolled over, his broad frame bursting at the seams of a dark suit. Garret was a traditionalist, ruthless and greedy for territorial expansion. He swirled his drink, his eyes glinting with clear provocation.
"A magnificent spread," Garret said, stopping in front of Damon. "Though I must say, the hall feels a bit empty without children running around. The regional elders were just discussing how quiet Crescent Moon has been these past few years."
The room’s ambient chatter dropped slightly as nearby wolves turned their ears toward the conversation.
Damon didn't flinch. He took a slow sip of his whiskey, his pitch black eyes fixing on Garret with an intensity that made the older Alpha's smile flicker. "Crescent Moon’s strength is measured by its borders and its warriors, Garret. Not by the noise in its halls."
"Of course, of course," Garret chuckled, though there was no humor in it. "But bloodlines matter, Damon. A pack without a strong heir is like a fortress built on sand. People start to wonder if the line is dying out. They start to wonder if the Alpha is truly capable of maintaining his hold."
Freya’s jaw tightened, her cheeks flushing with humiliation, but she forced her polite smile to stay locked in place.
Damon stepped forward, closing the distance between himself and Garret. His dominant Alpha aura flared outward, heavy and suffocating like a sudden drop in barometric pressure. Several lower ranking wolves in the nearby circle instinctively lowered their gazes, their inner beasts whimpering under the sheer weight of Brutus’s presence.
"If you ever feel compelled to test my hold on this region, Garret," Damon murmured, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous growl, "you are welcome to challenge me for it directly. Right here. Right now."
Garret swallowed hard, the arrogance instantly draining from his face as he backed down. "Just making conversation, Alpha Knight. No offense intended."
"Then go make conversation elsewhere," Damon said coldness dripping from every word.
Garret quickly excused himself, disappearing into the crowd. Jax stepped up beside Damon a second later, handing him a fresh drink while keeping his voice low. "Nicely done. Garret will be nursing that bruised ego for the rest of the night."
"He’s right about one thing," Freya muttered bitterly under her breath, turning to face Damon. "They all see it. They smell the vulnerability on us."
"They see what they want to see," Damon growled. "Control yourself, Freya."
Before Freya could bite back, the heavy oak doors at the entrance of the banquet hall swung open. The grand herald stepped forward, clearing his throat.
"Announcing Alpha Marcus of the Bloodmoon Pack!"
Damon’s eyes snapped to the entrance.
Marcus walked in alone, radiating a calm, grounded power. Unlike the grand, theatrical displays of the other leaders, Marcus wore a simple black suit, his posture confident and relaxed. As the leader of the pack closest to the southern human cities, his territory was a crucial buffer zone and one Damon had been trying to scrutinize for months.
Damon handed his glass to a passing waiter and walked straight toward Marcus, Jax half a step behind him.
"Marcus," Damon said, extending a hand in greeting. "Glad you made the journey."
Marcus clasped Damon’s hand in a firm, neutral grip. "Alpha Knight. Thank you for the hospitality."
"I was beginning to think Bloodmoon would decline the invitation," Damon said, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as he mapped Marcus's face for any sign of deception. "Your pack has been remarkably quiet lately. Busy with the southern borders?"
"We keep to ourselves and mind our business, Damon," Marcus replied smoothly, meeting his glare head on without an ounce of fear. "It keeps the peace."
"Mind your business, or hide things?" Damon pressed, stepping closer. "My scouts reported unusual shifter movement near the Blackwood human hub last month. Independent wolves operating without pack registration. I’m thinking of sending a battalion down south to sweep the area and secure the border."
A subtle shift occurred in Marcus's eyes a microscopic tightening of his jaw that only another Alpha would catch.
"Blackwood falls under Bloodmoon’s jurisdiction, Damon," Marcus said, his tone turning into pure steel. "My pack manages the human city borders just fine. If you send Crescent Moon enforcers across my line without explicit permission, I will treat it as an act of war."
The air between the two Alpha leaders turned electric. Jax braced himself, his hands hovering near his sides, while several guards throughout the hall subtly adjusted their stances.
Damon’s inner wolf paced wildly. Something in Marcus’s defensive tone set off alarms in Damon’s head. Marcus was acting protective not of territory, but of something hidden inside that city.
"You're very defensive about a human city, Marcus," Damon whispered, his voice dark and brimming with suspicion. "Why? Is there something in Blackwood you don't want me to find?"
Marcus smiled, a cold, knowing look that sent a sudden spike of phantom pain straight through Damon's chest.
"Some things, Alpha Knight," Marcus said quietly, "are best left in the past. For your sake, and for everyone else's."
Marcus gave a brief nod of respect, turned on his heel, and walked away toward the bar, leaving Damon standing at the center of the hall, his pulse hammering in his ears.
Damon stared at Marcus’s retreating back, his hand tightening into a bloodless fist. Blackwood, his mind echoed. He's hiding something in Blackwood.
