The Spark In The Dark

1090 Words
The morning after the opening gala, the Alpha Summit moved from the grand ballroom to the high security conference hall located deep within the subterranean levels of the Crescent Moon Estate. Soundproofed, lined with silver infused steel, and shielded against outside surveillance, it was where real power was brokered and territories were remapped. Damon sat at the head of the massive slate table, flanked by Jax and his top councilors. To his left sat Marcus, composed and quiet, nursing a cup of black coffee. Surrounding them were seven other regional leaders, their voices filling the room with heated debates over trade routes, rogue pack incursions, and shared border patrol protocols. Though Damon led the discussions with sharp authority, his mind remained trapped in the conversation he had shared with Marcus the night before. Some things are best left in the past. Marcus’s words played on an infinite loop in Damon’s head. Brutus was restless, pacing at the edges of his consciousness, scratching at his ribs with sharp claws. The mate bond, dormant for five years, was throbbing with a strange, frantic heat. It was subtle, barely a whisper, but it pointed in one definitive direction: South. "Alpha Knight," Alpha Garret’s voice cut through his thoughts, demanding attention. "We need to address the border security near the Blackwood human corridor. Rogue wolf activity has increased by twenty percent in the last quarter alone. If we don't establish a joint task force, those human cities will become a breeding ground for unsanctioned packs." Damon leaned back in his leather chair, tapping a finger against the sleek marble tabletop. "Bloodmoon oversees that sector, Garret. Marcus claims his territory is secure." "And I stand by it," Marcus spoke up, his voice calm and firm as all eyes shifted to him. "My enforcers run three daily sweeps along the Blackwood perimeter. Any rogue entering the human sector without a temporary permit is detained immediately. We do not need a joint task force, nor do we need Crescent Moon soldiers patrolling our backyard." "Detained?" Garret scoffed, throwing his hands up in mock exasperation. "Or sheltered? You’re far too soft on unranked wolves, Marcus. Blackwood is a massive city with millions of humans. It’s the easiest place in the region for a stray wolf or a pregnant rogue to vanish without a trace." The word hit Damon like a physical blow. A pregnant rogue. Damon’s hand slammed down onto the desk, the sheer force cracking the edge of the slate. The room fell into absolute, suffocating silence. Every Alpha froze, feeling the sudden, violent surge of Damon’s aura flooding the chamber. "Marcus," Damon said, his dark eyes locked onto the Bloodmoon leader with lethal intensity. "Is there something you want to tell me about Blackwood?" Marcus didn't flinch, though his knuckles whitened slightly around his coffee mug. "I have nothing to report that isn't already in my monthly territory logs, Damon." "Then you won't mind if I send a small team of my personal trackers to conduct a routine audit of the sector," Damon countered, his tone leaving zero room for negotiation. "Just to ensure Garret's concerns are thoroughly addressed." Marcus slowly set his cup down. "If your trackers step foot in Blackwood without my express written consent, I will treat it as a direct violation of the Regional Pack Accord. Bloodmoon will close its borders to Crescent Moon entirely." The threat hung in the air, heavy and loaded. Closing the southern border would sever Crescent Moon's fastest supply lines to the coast, costing Damon millions every week. It was a massive political risk for Marcus one no sane Alpha would take over a routine border audit. Unless he was protecting something priceless. Damon’s heart hammered against his ribs. The realization struck him with the clarity of a lightning bolt. Marcus wasn't just guarding territory. He was shielding her. Before Damon could press further, Jax leaned down, whispering urgently into his ear. "Damon, calm down. Every Alpha in this room is watching. If you ignite a civil war over a hunch, the council will use it to challenge your leadership." Damon forced his breath to slow, forcing Brutus back into the shadows, though his blood burned like molten lead. He fixed Marcus with a tight, dangerous smile. "We will table the Blackwood issue for today," Damon said smoothly, though his voice dripped with promise. "Let us move to the regional economic treaties." Three hundred miles away in the city of Blackwood, the sun was just beginning to set over the bustling streets. Ava stood inside the back office of her cafe, cross-referencing inventory spreadsheets on her laptop. Outside, the steady rhythm of city traffic provided a soothing backdrop, but Ava couldn't shake the heavy knot of anxiety sitting in the pit of her stomach. Her phone buzzed on the desk. She snatched it up instantly. "Marcus?" she asked, her voice hushed. "Ava," Marcus’s voice came through the line, low and tense. "I’m calling from a secure line during the Summit recess. We have a situation." Ava dropped her pen, her posture going rigid. "Did he find out?" "Not officially," Marcus said. "But Garret brought up rogue activity in Blackwood during the council meeting. Damon took the bait. He pushed hard to send his personal trackers down here. I blocked him using the Pack Accord treaties, but I crossed a line to do it." Ava swallowed the lump in her throat. "How bad is it?" "He knows I'm hiding something," Marcus warned quietly. "Damon is sharp, Ava. He saw how far I was willing to go to keep him out of Blackwood. He’s suspicious. He won't wait for council approval for long. He’s going to send scouts illegally." Ava looked through the glass window of her office. In the main seating area of the cafe, Leo was sitting at a table with his sitter, happily building a tower out of wooden blocks. His silver eyed gaze caught hers for a second, and he gave her a wide, toothy grin. Her inner wolf growled, a fierce, protective snarl that echoed in her mind. "Let him send them," Ava said, her voice turning to solid ice. "If Damon Knight thinks he can walk into my city and take my son, he's going to find out that the weak girl he threw away five years ago died the night he rejected her." "Ava, don't do anything reckless” "I won't be reckless, Marcus," she interrupted smoothly, her dark eyes flashing amber in the dim light of the office. "I'll be ready."
