“Bill,” Jana said as she tracked him down. “We can’t just leave her like this.”
“I hear you, but my hands are tied. Without a threat to the sovereignty of the United States, I can’t commit resources. Look, you saw the intel. It’s a detail of some hair-brained plan to steal a weapon from us back in the 60’s. Kind of pisses me off, if you want to know the truth. They’re our allies, for God’s sake.”
“What am I supposed to do, go back and tell her, sorry we can’t help, here’s a bus ticket and some spending money?”
“Of course not.” His voice reminded Jana of her grandfather’s. He took her by the shoulders. “You’ve known me a long time, Jana. Did you really think I would send a young woman out into danger? It’s just that I can’t put government resources on it, and you know it.”
