Chapter 18 Orion's POV "What's the new update on Sophie?" I asked my Beta as I walked into my office. He stood up and didn't take his seat until I was seated behind my desk. It's been a month since I started searching for her and each time we thought we had found something, it always ended in a dead trail. It almost seemed like Sophie didn't want to be found or something. Like she had disappeared from the face of the earth had used my influence and connections as Alpha to check other packs but nothing, Each of them denied knowing anyone by that name and picture. I was losing my mind with each day that passed by. The extra time I had asked for was about to lapse and I wasn't any closer to finding her.It was frustrating and a serious waste of time but this was Sophie, she was the first woman that made my heart beat, the person I responded to. Her gentle soul and kind heart drew me to her and I just couldn't imagine being with anyone else.I don't care about the mate bond because Sophie and I always swore that we would reject our mates and be together. No one has more information on this guy she ran off with, not even Old Man Heartfield. I wasn't sure if he was her mate or if he was just some rando she had fallen for in my absence.I could understand if she missed me and wanted something with someone to fill the void but what I failed to understand was why she ran away with him. We had dreamed of our marriage as kids. She'd force me to dance with her and we'd go at it until we were perfect.I used to be a terrible dancer, always stepping on her feet so when I travelled abroad, that was one of the first things I had learnt. Because of Sophie I had enrolled in a dancing school and learned everything there was to know. Now there was no dance step I didn't know, even the most difficult ones. Seeing how much effort I put into making sure everything would be perfect made my heart ache that she had run away. I wished she would have left a note or something, anything that would provide some kind of explanation as to why she just disappeared. My beta, James shook his head and sent me a sad smile which caused my heart to slide down to the pit of my stomach. I didn't need to know anymore, his face had told me everything. There was no news on Sophie which meant, I would have to focus on my wedding to Ciara, there was no other way. "Alpha," he called and I met his gaze. He had a serious look in his eyes and he still had that sad smile on his face. I narrowed my eyes and prepared myself for whatever he was going to say. "What is it, James?" "It's Old Man Heartfield." I didn't wait for him to say anything more before I rose up from my feet and ran out of my office. Even though Old Man Heartfield wasn't my direct family, he had become someone important to me over the years. As a child, he had been a man I looked up to greatly and even now, I cared about him too much. Also, he was important to Sophie so he was by default important to me as well. Thankfully, my father had just returned from somewhere so the driver and car were on standby. Brushing past him, I climbed into the car and the driver zoomed off. Thoughts of Ciara suddenly entered my mind and I asked the driver to stop the car. I had been so distracted, I hadn't even considered her, not one bit. For the first time in a long time, I felt guilty about the way I had been treating her. Reaching for my phone, I dialled James to find out if she was still at the pack or if she had heard about her grandfather. James picked up on the second ring."Alpha," "Where is your Luna?" I asked not sure how else to phrase the question. I have never referred to as anything other than Ciara or pest or any other bad word you could think of and now just mentioning Luna about her sounded weird. "I have no idea Alpha but I can find out." I ended the call and instructed the driver to get us back to the pack house immediately. Getting there, I got down from the car just as James walked out of the pack house."Well?" I asked, irritation getting the best of me. "She has gone to the Heartfield Estate Alpha." I didn't bother asking how she found it and simply walked back to the car and got in, telling the driver to drive off. I leaned against the window pane and wondered what she must be going through and everything she was feeling. From the little I knew about her, she had been brought from her parent's home to the Heartfiedl Estate because she had experienced hell with them. Now that family that had been taking care of her so well was bedridden in the hospital. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that she was not doing so well and I know she needs someone. I might not be the best person or the right person for the job but at the moment, I was all she had. The question was, would she let me be there for her? Would she lean on me? Would she let me share her pain? But more importantly, did I want to be there for her? We have never had a normal conversation and the energy I had been giving her until now has only been bitter, sour. I was sure she would rather hang herself than spend time with me. I guess I had to switch my attention to her now because so far, Sophie didn't want me and perhaps I was just wasting my time and resources searching for her when she didn't want to be found. "Alpha we are here."I had to step up and be a better Alpha, mate and husband to her. She didn't even know I was her mate.
