I jerked up from the bed with my eyes open in alarm, the little light that saturated the room told me that it was way past 5 o'clock. I checked on the other girls. They were all out of the room because their sleeping mat was empty. They couldn't even wake me up, surely wanting to get me into trouble. I quickly got dressed and ran out of the room but I was very confused on where led to the kitchen area. The place was busy with people so I decided to ask a woman passing by.

“Please, excuse me… ” I could barely get a word in when she increased her pace like I was too disgusting to associate with.

I sighed in frustration. At this rate, I would be attracting double punishment for being extra late to my work.

“FIONA!” I heard the familiar voice of Hailey call to me. She was walking towards me in anger and I backed away unconsciously.

“I'm sorry madam Hailey” I apologized with my head bowed. I knew there was no need to give excuses, I was already in big trouble.

“You broke the rules of no lateness and you will be duly punished. Return to your post for now and meet me later today for your punishment”, She said and turned to walk away when I stopped her.

“Uhmm madam Hailey, I don't know the way to the kitchen” I said in a quiet voice.

Hailey looked at me for a few seconds and sighed, “Follow me” she said.

We walked for a few minutes and arrived at an open door that was bustling with work and cooking.

“Thank you ma” I said.

“Don't be late again, learn to be smart or you will not even know when you incure the alpha's wrath” she warned and left.

I walked into the room and almost everybody turned to look at me, I felt nervous to meet their eyes so I just looked down.

“Are you the new recruit?” A fat bulky woman with a plastered frown came up to me and asked.

“Y..yes I'm Fiona”

“YOU ARE LATE!” the woman roared and hit me hard on my back.

“I'm sorry, I promise it won't happen again” I apologized quickly, biting my lip to hold me from wincing, my eyes already gathered tears that threatened to drop.

“They are almost done cooking, you will serve the food to the alpha's dinner room. One mistake and you are dead” she said with a voice dripping with venom.

“Y..yes” I stammered.

“Join Ruby to set the tray” she said and pointing at a short blonde-haired girl before walking away. I quickly went to just the girl to up the tray.

“She's the kitchen supervisor” the girl spoke up and said with a small smile.

“Oh, that explains it” I said.

“I'm Ruby. You already knew that”

“Yeah, I'm Fiona” I said, managing to form a small smile as well. At least there was one friendly person here.

We worked in silence thereafter and in a few minutes the tray was set for me to carry. It wasn't that heavy and it was in sections so I, Ruby and some other girls were carrying different sections. I left the room and walked with the others to where the dinning room was located. A sweet intoxicating scent attacked my nose as I got closer to the dining hall, it smelled of pine and wet earth, I have never smelled anything like it before. I unconsciously walked even faster to the direction of the scent, it was like something was pushing me to find the source, no matter what.

And I finally found the source. It was a guy with dark tousled hair that fell just above his shoulders. His eyes was a deep shade of amber that drew me in, he was tall and had a muscular build. He was staring at me too, his gaze was intense making my heart beat anxiously. The word “Mate” resounded in my head, shocking me, so this man here was my mate?

“That's the Alpha Rick, stop making eye contact” Ruby said by my side with a low voice, jerking me from my induced trance.

Wait!... the Alpha is my mate? Alpha Rick of the Pale moon pack is my mate!!!

“Y..es” I bowed my head slightly. I felt so anxious but yet so excited, I finally found my mate and it was the alpha, I felt truly lucky. For years, I had been all by myself with no one who cared about me. I thought I was going to be lonely for the rest of my life but here I was, standing in front of my mate.

“Why are you standing there like a statue, Rick? That's the new slave we bought. Come sit let's eat” Alpha Ralph stated cheerfully.

“You are an Omega with no wolf” Alpha Rick finally spoke up, the intensity in his eyes dimmed down and he had a frown on his face.

I couldn't tell if it was a statement or a question, so I nodded and said, “Yes, Alpha Rick” The tray in my hand shook slightly in nervousness.

“What is the problem, Rick?” Alpha Ralph asked from where he sat. He must have noticed the tension between us.

“Dad, she's my mate” Rick dropped the news, making people present gasped in shock. But I couldn't see the happiness in his eyes making my heart stop for a second. Was he not happy to have met his mate? Was he not happy to have met me?

“What? That's…” Alpha Ralph stood up in shock.

“It's nothing Dad, she is a wolfless omega and our slave, I don't accept her as my mate” he announced, every word was like a knife to my heart.

I gasped and the tray of food fell down from my hands, spilling its contents on the floor but I didn't care. I stepped back weakly, I suddenly felt sick in my stomach and I had a bitter taste at the back of my throat. Just when I thought my life was getting better and better, I was rejected by my mate a few minutes after we had just met. Was I really cursed like people called me?

“Rick …” Alpha Ralph was trying to say, but Rick cut him off.

“I'm the alpha of the pack, the people' likes and dislikes reflect through me. How do you think the pack will take the news that a weak mutt will be their Luna and not just any girl but the girl that was brought as a slave? I just got into power and I want to avoid such controversy. This topic is not up for debate, it's her fault for being so weak and useless” Alpha Rick spat out, his voice thick with disgust.

By the time he was done, my eyes were full with unshed tears. How could a mate who was supposed to love you say such awful words? His words replayed over and over again in my head, making my heart constrict in pain and my body feel numb.

Amidst the palpable tension in the room, someone walked in and greeted, “Alpha Rick, Alpha Ralph...sorry for coming so late for dinner, I…” The girl's voice trailed off, noticing the tensed atmosphere. Our eyes met, she was very beautiful with flowing auburn hair that cascaded down her back in waves and piercing green eyes that seemed to have a dark shade around them. Her presence unsettled me and I felt a bad energy from her.

Who was she and why did she look close to the Alpha family?
