I watched the clock, giving class a couple minutes to get started before raising my hand.
“Señora, I feel sick. Can I go to the nurse?”
It was Wednesday, a full week since we’d set our plan to call Rufner during Ryan’s lunch period. A full week spent being a dedicated student and devoted daughter. A full week with no new leads. I’d tried not to think about my ghosts, lest I drive myself crazy with untestable theories. This was easier said than done, but I’d stayed decently distracted thanks to my new favorite online hang-out: Uncle Ed’s Forum. The reptilian board, in particular, was its own mesmerizing strain of weird.
