BANG!
Emily screamed.
Sophia collapsed to the floor.
"Sophia!"
Daniel tried to get out of the bed, but Emily held him back.
"Daniel, you can't!"
"She's been shot!"
His mother quickly rushed to Sophia.
But Sophia was still breathing.
The bullet had missed her heart, striking her in the side.
"She's alive," Daniel's mother said.
Sophia opened her eyes weakly.
"Daniel..."
"I'm here."
Daniel looked toward the doorway.
The armed men were advancing.
"We have to go," his mother said.
Emily grabbed Sophia's arm.
"Can you stand?"
Sophia nodded weakly.
"Help me."
Daniel's mother picked up the black pouch.
"The keys."
Emily held them tightly.
"We have both."
"Then we need to get to the house."
They hurried through a private hospital exit while the sound of footsteps echoed behind them.
Daniel could barely walk, but he refused to stop.
They reached the waiting car.
Daniel's mother drove.
Emily sat beside Daniel while Sophia lay across the back seat, pressing her hand against her wound.
Daniel looked at her.
"Why did you step in front of me?"
Sophia gave a weak smile.
"Because I meant what I said."
"What?"
"I love you."
Daniel looked away.
Sophia closed her eyes.
"But I finally understand that loving someone doesn't mean possessing them."
Emily looked at her through the mirror.
For the first time, there was no jealousy in Sophia's eyes.
Only acceptance.
After several minutes, the car stopped in front of the abandoned family house.
The house stood silently beneath the night sky.
Emily stepped out.
"This is it."
Daniel's mother nodded.
"Your father's office is beneath the house."
They entered through the broken front door.
The inside was covered in dust.
Daniel looked around.
"I haven't been here since I was a child."
His mother led them down a narrow staircase.
At the bottom was a large iron door.
Emily pulled out the first key.
Daniel's mother gave her the second.
"Together."
Emily inserted both keys.
She turned them at the same time.
CLICK.
The door opened.
Everyone froze.
Inside was a small room filled with boxes, documents, photographs and old files.
But there was one thing that immediately caught Daniel's attention.
A wooden desk.
On it was a diary.
Daniel slowly walked toward it.
"My father's diary."
He picked it up.
His hands trembled as he opened the first page.
There was a handwritten message.
To my son, Daniel.
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
He began reading.
"If you are reading this, then I am probably no longer alive."
Daniel swallowed hard.
"I need you to know that I never betrayed you or your mother."
He turned the page.
"The people I worked with were using my company to move money through illegal accounts. When I discovered the truth, I tried to expose them."
Daniel's mother covered her mouth.
His father had known everything.
"I knew they would come after my family. That is why I created a secret account containing evidence of everything they had done."
Daniel looked at his mother.
"The account..."
She nodded.
"The one your father told me about."
Daniel continued reading.
"The evidence is hidden where nobody would think to look."
Emily stepped closer.
"Where?"
Daniel turned the page.
His expression suddenly changed.
"Inside the family company."
Emily frowned.
"But they searched the company."
Daniel shook his head.
"Not the building."
He looked at the final line.
"The evidence is hidden inside the portrait of my father."
Daniel's mother suddenly looked frightened.
"Your grandfather's portrait?"
"Yes."
A noise came from outside.
Everyone froze.
Footsteps.
Someone was entering the house.
Sophia whispered,
"They followed us."
Daniel closed the diary.
"Then we don't have much time."
They rushed back upstairs.
The front door slowly opened.
A man walked into the house.
Sophia stopped breathing.
"My father."
Daniel stared at the man.
He was older than he remembered, but there was no mistaking him.
Sophia's father smiled.
"You've caused me a lot of trouble, Daniel."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You killed my father."
The man laughed.
"Your father was foolish."
Sophia shook her head.
"You used me."
Her father looked at her.
"I gave you a purpose."
"You destroyed my life."
"You were supposed to marry Daniel and give me everything he knew."
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
"But I loved him."
Her father smiled coldly.
"And that was your mistake."
He raised his gun.
Emily stepped in front of Daniel.
But Daniel pulled her behind him.
"No."
His mother suddenly shouted,
"Daniel, the portrait!"
Daniel looked toward the old portrait hanging on the wall.
He understood.
He rushed toward it.
His father's old partner fired.
BANG!
The bullet struck the wall.
Daniel pulled the portrait down.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a small metal box.
He grabbed it.
His father's partner ran toward him.
But Sophia stepped in his way.
"Enough!"
She pushed him back.
He raised his gun toward her.
Suddenly, police sirens filled the night.
The man froze.
Daniel's mother had secretly called the police before they left the hospital.
Within seconds, officers stormed into the house.
Sophia's father was arrested.
The other men were captured.
Daniel stood silently, holding the metal box.
For the first time in years, the truth was finally within his hands.
Weeks later, the evidence from the box brought down the entire organization.
Daniel's father's name was cleared.
His company was restored.
And the people responsible for his death were finally brought to justice.
Sophia survived her injury.
Before she left the city, she went to see Daniel one last time.
She stood outside his house.
Emily was beside him.
Sophia smiled.
"I came to say goodbye."
Daniel nodded.
"Thank you for everything."
Sophia looked at Emily.
"Take care of him."
Emily smiled softly.
"I will."
Sophia turned to Daniel.
"I used to think loving you meant making you mine."
She smiled through her tears.
"Now I know that sometimes loving someone means letting them be happy with the person they truly love."
Daniel's eyes softened.
"I hope you find happiness too."
Sophia nodded.
"I will."
She turned and walked away.
Daniel watched her disappear down the road.
Emily slipped her hand into his.
"You okay?"
He looked at her.
"For the first time in a long time."
Emily smiled.
"Then let's go home."
Daniel squeezed her hand.
"Together?"
"Together."
They walked toward the house.
But neither of them noticed the envelope lying beneath the old tree.
It had Daniel's name written across it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Daniel's father was standing beside a man Daniel had never seen before.
On the back of the photograph were five words:
YOUR FATHER HAD ONE MORE SECRET.
And beneath the words was a date.
A date that was only three days away.
Daniel's smile disappeared when he saw it.
Emily looked at him.
"What is it?"
Daniel slowly handed her the photograph.
Her eyes widened.
"Daniel..."
He stared into the darkness.
"Maybe it's not over."
Emily tightened her grip on his hand.
And somewhere in the distance, a phone began to ring.
THE END...
