Kiera.
“How could a weak omega pup like you be mated to me? This is impossible.” I took a deep breath in, visibly tired of life.
“I, Aldric Grimwood, reject you, Kiera Silverwood, as my mate.” His voice rang out, and I could feel my heart searing as the mate pull was being broken. I gritted my teeth in pain as I fell to the floor, hitting the ground with my fist, hoping that the physical pain would at least supersede the one that was brewing deep inside of my heart.
“I didn't know Alphas were this stupid and conceited. You just rejected me because I'm an Omega? I don't even have a say in that, and I'm definitely not the moon goddess’s favourite child.” I screamed, lunging a dry piece of wood onto his back as he walked away, and he turned to stare at me.
“Take her back to the palace. Lock her up in the dungeon for defiling the Alpha.” He instructed, and the guards picked me up like I weighed nothing while hurling me over their shoulders, and I screamed, kicking my feet in the air.
“You're all the same. Flexing your power around like it would do you any good, but it only goes deep to slice your heart in half.” I screamed until my voice drowned out the forest.
On getting to the pack house, I was tossed into the dungeon, and I knew how the drill went. Probably because I've been here more than once for defaulting to some kind of stupid, high-end law. In a few hours, the council was going to call to see me and then decide my punishment, and that was exactly what happened.
However, I was filled with extreme joy when the verdict stated that I was to work in the palace as a maid. It was degrading and totally not something to be excited about, but however, it was better than going back to that stupid family of mine.
The Beta can marry Anna now, and I wouldn't have a hand in it; this was smooth.
“The goddess brings you back to earth, Kiera. Where has your mind drifted to?” I heard the head maid's voice call, snapping me out of my ocean of thoughts, and I looked down in horror to see blood flowing from my hands down to the sink. I had mistakenly cut myself with the knife as I was washing the dishes while my thoughts just ran wild and free.
“Oh.” I mouthed and turned on the tap so it could wash off the blood but turned it off immediately when the head maid stepped into the palace.
“We're having a banquet today. The Alpha's feast, and you all know how it goes. For those that just got in, it's a feast where Alphas from around the province come together to feast and bond.” I nodded knowingly.
I had heard of it.
“I've picked out the list of maids that would serve inside of the banquet, and the rest would remain for kitchen duties. There are to be no mistakes.” Her voice was stern as she said that, and I clasped my teeth together.
She began listing the maids, and somehow, I was included to serve. I had to be around narcissistic and misogynistic men just because I was a maid? I've done it before anyway; it's nothing I can't handle.
Evening had fast approached, and we were all dressed in one uniform, matching into the banquet, ready to give out smiles and drinks, food and fruits, though none of the smiles was meant to reach the eye.
I was in charge of fruit serving and began plating them gracefully while the Alphas joked about women and laughed at their own stupid jokes.
“I haven't seen this one before, Aldric; is she new?” One of the Alphas questioned, trying to subtly reach for my hand, but I evaded him, moving on to the next immediately.
“Yes.” He answered from the top of the podium.
“You surely have an eye for good maids; she has the right curves in the right places. I would love to get a taste later.” They burst out into laughter while my brows contorted and my hands folded into a fist.
Sex maniacs! Did they think it was fun to try and berate someone like that?
I had forgotten I was supposed to keep serving and act like nothing was wrong, but I snapped out of my little imagination where I had stabbed the Alpha to death because of something soothing on my hands.
I looked up to find an Alpha, inconspicuously rubbing my hands that I had folded in a fist midway to serve him. He was drawing little circles almost like they were meant to calm me down, and they were working.
I retrieved my hands immediately while clearing my throat uncomfortably as I placed grapes onto his plate, but then this time, he just grabbed my hands and smiled at me.
“Mate.” He muttered, and I didn't feel it until he mentioned it.
That fluttery feeling, that burst of joy and excitement that you knew was coming from your wolf, it was all there, and I wasn't sure how to handle it.
An Alpha had rejected me before, so I knew better than to keep my hopes up.
“Your hand is blistered; you shouldn't be serving.” He seemed warm as he retrieved the basket of fruit and dropped it onto the table.
“Whoever needs some fruit has legs and can get it for themselves. Or better, find another maid to do it. She's not going to be doing that.” His voice rang out, and shock filled me up as he stood up and guided me to take a seat in his position while tearing up his shirt and tying up my hands properly.
I could get used to this type of treatment. I could really get used to it.
“Is there a problem, Kael? She's a maid, and she would handle it.” Aldric Grimwood's voice rang out, and I made to stand up, but he merely shook his head in disagreement.
“Ah, no, stepbrother. Not anymore. She's my mate, and she's definitely not serving tables anymore.” He refused and…hold on — did he just say stepbrother?
Aldric Grimwood had a stepbrother? And even worse, they didn't look like they were on the best of terms at all.
