Chapter 2: The Letter Writer

264 Words
I sat in the attic, surrounded by the letters, my mind racing with questions. Who wrote these beautiful words? What was their story? And why were they hidden away for so long? I carefully turned the letters over, searching for any clues. That's when I noticed a small signature on the last page of each letter - "J". J. Who was J? I remembered my grandmother mentioning a family friend named Jack, who had been a close family friend during the war. Could it be him? I decided to ask my grandmother about the letters and Jack. I went downstairs, letters in hand, and found her in the kitchen, baking cookies. "Grandma, I found these letters in the attic," I said, showing her the bundle. "Do you know anything about them?" She looked up, surprised, and then her eyes softened. "Oh, those old things," she said, wiping her flour-covered hands on her apron. "I had almost forgotten about them." "Who wrote them?" I asked, my curiosity piqued. "Jack Harris," she replied, a faraway look in her eyes. "He was a dear friend of our family's during the war. He and Emily... well, they were close." I sensed a hint of secrecy and asked, "What do you mean by close?" Grandma hesitated, then said, "They were in love, dear. But it was a complicated time, and their love story was... unfinished." Unfinished? What did that mean? I felt a sudden urge to know more about Jack and Emily's story. Little did I know, I was about to uncover a family secret that would change everything.
