Town

980 Words
Kat arrived on the road and looked both ways and didn't see a town. Kat wondered did I go off-trail. She would be on the left side or the right side of this town. She saw a carriage coming so she stopped and waited. When the carriage came close, she asked in a loud voice, "hay is there a town around here?" "Yes, there is a town that way. You aren't from around here?" (???) "No, I'm not. I come from the south. Some adventures told me to go north. I haven't slept in a bed for a while. I figured it is a good idea to drop by the town." (Kat) "My name is Ado. We are going to Yosemite town. If you want, you can come with us." (Ado) Ado was your typical bishōnen with blonde hair and light green eyes; He was wearing a grayish trench coat. He was with two females in his party and four other men. "I'm Kat. I'll walk with you. Do you know this town?" (Kat) "Yep, We are adventures from this town. We are on an escort mission. We have been on the road for the last few weeks."(Ado) "Interesting. Ado, those adventures I told you about; They said," It will cost to get in the town. I should hunt five rabbits to pay with to enter the city. I find that's strange. It wouldn't be the first odd stuff that I learned. You stated that you know the city. Is it true what those guys said?" (Kat) "Yep, It's true. This town is an adventure town. It has a few dungeons. People come from different villages to try to get rich in the dungeons. The rabbits are acceptable as payment. Five rabbits, bad quality fur, equals the cost to enter. The meat of the rabbits is payment for them selling the fur. Most people are ok in losing a couple of coins to the guards." (Ado) "Does Adventures have to pay?" (Kat) "Yes, everyone has to pay. The only benefit is our adventures don't need to go through a long check. We just show the guild card and pay." (Ado) "That's just stupid. Is the whole kingdom this way?" (Kat) "Yes, that I know." (Ado) "Why do you think it's stupid?" (a man from the carriage) "The nobles live on taxes. They should want to promote sells. Taxing on income is the best way to go. Let's say taxing 25% of the profits. 25% is just a guesstimate. You don't want it too much, or people will run away. You don't want it to little or too many people will move into the town. More they support the town growth; they can get to pay fewer taxes. Let's say if I was the Lord of this town. First, I would confront the guilds masters in a meeting. Each member of a guild will pay 25% from the profits as tax to the guild. The guild will then pay the Lord a portion of the tax. The portion based on what they can offer to the Lord." (Kat) "What could they offer the Lord?" (???) "The 'adventure guild' could offer protection to the town. If war to break out, the guards would go to the front line. Who would step up to protect the city? Some of the adventures could be stronger than the guards. The Lord would never know. If the Lord's knights did the adventure training, the Lord could get the first report on the excellent quality of possible troops. The merchant guild could offer to bring more business to this town. Instead, a Lord working hard to develop his territory gives the guilds incentive to do it for him. To bring out the picture, each member of the adventure guild has a ranking. 'Rank 1' to 'Rank 5' is the education period and the ability to fight as an individual and as a unit. To get to 'Rank 6', you need to learn etiquette. 'Rank 6' should be able to slide in a grunt position in wartime. 'Rank 7' needs backing from more than one guild master. The support is hard to get, because if this adventure brings disrespect to himself. The disrespect also falls on the guild masters. 'Rank 7' should be able to slide in as a grunt leader position in wartime. 'Rank 8' needs backing from a low status noble. 'Rank 8' should be able to slide in a knight position. 'Rank 9' needs support from a 'high status noble.' 'Rank 9' should be able to slip in a knight commander position. 'Rank 10' needs backing from a Royal member. 'Rank 10' should be able to move into a Royal guard position. This rank system is called white and black books. The 'white book' are troops that the Lord pays regularly. The 'black book' is troops; he doesn't pay at all. In any battle, you have to have a backup." (Kat) "What would merchant guild contribute to war?" (???) "The merchant guild has the same ranking as the adventure guild. The troops are worthless without a supply train. Without food, water, and equipment, the troops would be dead in no time. Who is good at inventory control, supply, and demand? It would be a merchant. The final thing that both can do is gather information. It might be a pain for the guilds to write down a report of the mission. They might pass a village having a hard time. This information could be of benefit to the Lard. Learning ahead of time is the best thing. Why would a farmer run to the Lord? Receiving information from a guild master is more acceptable. As a Lord, I think using all assets available. Well, that's my opinion." (Kat) They finally got to the town. That had to stop the conversation and parted there. Kat got in a long line until it was finally her turn. The process of going to the town was annoying; She went with the flow.
