CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The night air hung heavy with the scent of saltwater, mingling with the faint fumes of oil and rust. The rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the wooden beams of the dock echoed in the distance, but the world felt still, as though holding its breath in anticipation. Amara stood near the edge of the dock, her gaze scanning the dark expanse of water, the moonlight reflecting off the surface in pale silver streaks. The only sounds were the distant calls of seagulls and the occasional creak of the dock underfoot. Marco stood beside her, his hand lightly resting on his gun, his eyes sharp and alert. They both knew they were walking into a dangerous game, and they were fully aware that there was no turning back now. “You think he’ll show up?” Marco asked quietly, his voice breaking the tense silence between them. “He will,” Amara replied, her voice steady despite the knot of unease in her stomach. “He always does.” A low hum of an engine echoed in the distance, cutting through the silence like a warning. It grew louder, and moments later, a sleek black car appeared from the shadows, its headlights cutting through the darkness. It slowed as it approached the dock, coming to a stop just a few feet away from where Amara and Marco stood. The driver’s side door opened, and out stepped Xander, his tailored suit glinting faintly in the moonlight. He walked toward them with his usual confident stride, a smirk playing at the corners of his lips. “You showed up,” Xander said with a chuckle, his voice smooth, as though the danger of the situation was nothing more than a game to him. “I wasn’t sure you would.” Amara didn’t respond immediately. She simply eyed him, her arms crossed in front of her as she studied his every movement. Xander had a way of making everything feel like a negotiation, even when he wasn’t speaking. There was always a hidden agenda, a price that needed to be paid. “I’m here,” Amara said, her voice cold. “Now tell me what I need to know.” Xander stopped a few feet away from her and motioned to the car, as if offering her a seat. “Let’s talk inside. It’ll be more comfortable.” Amara hesitated for only a moment, her instincts warning her that this was a mistake. But she didn’t come this far to back out now. She glanced at Marco, who gave her a nod of agreement. They walked to the car and slid inside, Marco sitting beside Amara, his gaze still watchful. Xander took the driver’s seat, starting the engine before pulling away from the dock, the car gliding silently through the empty streets. Xander didn’t speak for a while, letting the tension hang in the air. Amara’s mind raced, weighing every possible outcome. What was he going to ask for in exchange for the information she sought? What would be the price for Isabella’s life? Finally, Xander broke the silence. “So, you’re really going through with it. You want to take down Rafa, huh?” His tone was casual, but there was a sharp edge to it, like he was testing her resolve. “I’m not here to play games, Xander,” Amara replied firmly. “I want Isabella. I want Rafa, and I want answers.” Xander turned slightly in his seat, his eyes meeting hers in the rearview mirror. “You think you can just waltz into Rafa’s world and take whatever you want?” He laughed, but it wasn’t a friendly sound—it was cold, mocking. “You’re in way over your head, Amara. But I respect your courage.” “I don’t need your respect,” she shot back. “I need the truth.” Xander’s expression shifted, a glimmer of something darker flashing across his face. He took a deep breath before speaking again. “Alright. Here’s the deal. Rafa is a man of his word… most of the time. If you want to get to him, you need leverage. And that’s something I can help with. But it won’t come cheap.” Amara’s pulse quickened. “Leverage? What kind of leverage?” Xander’s lips curled into a sly smile, and he shifted the car into a higher gear, his focus still on the road. “The kind that gets you closer to Isabella. But also the kind that can destroy everything you’ve built—if you’re not careful.” Amara felt a chill in her bones. “What are you asking for?” Xander glanced at her, his eyes gleaming with a cold, calculating look. “You want to bring Rafa down? Fine. But first, I need something from you—something that’ll help me keep Rafa off my back while I help you with your little… problem.” “What do you want?” Marco asked sharply, his voice low. Xander smirked again, his gaze never leaving the road. “I need you to do a small job for me. Nothing too difficult, but it’ll show me that you’re serious. Once it’s done, I’ll give you all the information you need about Isabella. I’ll even give you the chance to confront Rafa.” Amara’s mind raced. She wasn’t here to make deals with Xander, but the idea of getting to Rafa—of finally getting to the heart of his empire—was too tempting. She had to play along. For now. “What’s the job?” she asked, her voice steady. Xander’s grin widened. “There’s a shipment coming in tomorrow night—something very valuable to Rafa. I want you to intercept it before it gets to him. If you can pull that off, then I’ll give you what you need to get to Isabella. But if you fail… well, let’s just say it won’t be good for anyone.” The car turned a corner and slowed to a stop in front of an old warehouse near the edge of the city. The building was dark, the only light coming from a few flickering streetlamps nearby. Xander put the car in park and turned to face Amara. “This is where it begins,” he said, his tone serious. “Do the job, and we’ll talk. Fail, and you’ll regret it.” Amara stepped out of the car, her mind already working on the plan. She knew this was dangerous—too dangerous—but she had no other choice. She couldn’t let fear stop her now. Not when Isabella’s life was on the line. She looked at Marco, who gave her a nod of understanding, his eyes hard with resolve. “We’ll do it,” Amara said, her voice resolute. Xander gave her a satisfied nod before turning and walking toward the warehouse. “Tomorrow night, then,” he called over his shoulder. “I’ll be watching.” Amara and Marco followed him inside, knowing that the real game was just about to begin.
