Damien was amazed at the events of the previous night. Never in a million years would he have thought that he would find his mate in the Council of all places! He had come here expecting to be bored out of his mind, if not openly attacked within the councils walls. He had convinced Alpha Peter to allow him to place his best fighters just outside the council territory in case there were any ambushes planned. He had voiced several times his foreboding at there only being three going into this reception, and one of those three was the Luna.
But when he saw Serenity at the bottom of those stairs his heart had jumped into his throat. “Mate.” It was her, after he had given up on ever finding her. He felt Alpha Peter and Luna Melissa stare at him in shock, but he couldn’t take his eyes from her. She was perfect. Her long auburn hair was pulled in a side braid and hung down to a dark green dress that highlighted her perfect form. He could tell she was athletic, but still curvy. Her arms and legs were toned, but pale.
His wolf, Grim, was flipping s**t in his head, threatening to break loose at any second. He wanted her near him, wanted to feel her and mark her, and never stop touching her. Damien couldn’t even argue with that desire. Not only was she physically perfect for him, but her blue-green eyes were piercing and he felt like even if they broke contact he would still see those eyes in his mind. He needed her.
Before he could make it to her she was dragged away and Grim growled harshly, as though he were about to go into battle. Ouch. Damien pushed Grim back. Just losing sight of her for the moment hurt him.
“Damien? Are you serious?” Luna Melissa turned to him. The servant had stopped and was pretending not to listen.
“That was her Mel.” Damien said, looking at the doors she had disappeared through. He couldn’t wait to go through them and see her again.
“Ok, well of course you want to go to her, but we have to get through this reception. I’m sorry, but you need to keep it together.” Alpha Peter stepped in front of him and forced him to look up. He would never use his Alpha voice on Damien unless he needed to, but he knew what could happen if this reception were not handled with the utmost diplomacy. The sudden emergence of his Beta’s mate made things a bit more complicated. He could only hope she wasn’t important to the council.
“I know. I’ll be fine, but make it quick.” Damien muttered. He tried to calm Grim down, they would be seeing her soon after all. Peter nodded and the servant led them to the room.
Damien quickly began scanning the people inside the hall while still trying to keep his face forward. He just needed to see her again. Grim could sense her, and that was enough for Damien to keep control and move forward with the rest of the group. Until the group reached the front of the hall and faced the four council leaders. Then Grim started crashing against every wall trying to get out. Damien yelled at him to calm down but he knew what had happened. She left. Why?
The reception must have taken thirty minutes but Damien didn’t hear a word, he was too busy trying to keep Grim calm. It was an exhausting effort, and by the end of it he really wanted a nap. But he wanted to find her more. As soon as the servant led them back into the main hall he took off. He hadn't been able to smell her before, because hers was too mixed with the foul smell of the other supernaturals, but now that Grim was looking for her he knew right away that she smelled of rain and honey. He breathed deeply and followed the faint trail to the beach. I will hold her until she is rid of the other's scent. Grim promised him angrily.
Later, once the vampire took her away from him he went straight to the alpha’s room. After a quick knock he entered. He knew they would be leaving in the morning, before the sunrise, and he had a request.
“We have to take her with us.” He blurted out. “I can’t be without her, not after this long, and not ever again.” Luna Melissa looked up at him for a second and then let out a squeal and jumped from her place at the edge of the bed and hugged him around the waist quickly.
“I knew she was somewhere! I just can’t believe it was here, but I’m so happy for you! Of course we have to take her with us!” She turned to Peter, who was pacing by the window. Damien was glad the Luna was already on his side. She would likely be able to talk Peter into anything.
“It’s not that simple. You know that already. She’s a member of the council. She belongs to them.” Peter was a great alpha, and one of the finest warriors, but he knew he didn’t have the man-power to go against the council. They had the equivalent of five full packs of fully trained warriors, where he might be lucky to call together another two if he needed help. “What is she even doing here? She smelled like a human.”
“She is human.” Damien looked at his friend. He knew what he was thinking and he had been just as surprised. He had thought she must be a witch, but Grim didn’t sense that, and she didn’t smell like a vamp or wolf. The chances of her not being a witch, but staying with vampires and not being turned was highly suspect. It just made Serenity that much more of a mystery that he was determined to solve.
“Look, I know you’re really excited right now, but we can’t just take her from the council. I’ll see if I can call a quick meeting with the council leaders, but I can’t promise anything.” Alpha Peter sighed and led Damien outside. “See if you can’t try and talk to her. Maybe she knows of a way she can leave.” He sighed again as he watched Damien walk towards the stairs.
If she even really wants to leave. Peter thought to himself. After the council had just tried to intimidate him into handing over his pack, he highly doubted they would willingly give one of there own up. Or if they did, if he should really be accepting her.
