Despite his double-barrelled name, Gordon Keble-Keith was a modest man and he did not believe in drawing unnecessary attention to either himself or his activities. His offices in Leadenhall Street were limited to three rooms rather shabbily furnished, and few people knew much of what went on behind their dingy walls.
Keble-Keith had the reputation of being an enormously wealthy man, but no one would have suspected it from his appearance. All the available evidence suggested that he only had one suit, one overcoat and one hat, and his brief-case was so worn, shapeless and nondescript that he never stood in any danger of having it snatched from him by a bandit.
