17: Adeline and Charles

827 Words
I sighed as I faced Adeline, her smile deflated and she led me out of the store. As we walked to a restaurant, I kept thinking about Dominic. I lost my calm and felt so emotional as memories of all the people he killed played in my mind. My dad and others were innocent. They didn't deserve such a cruel death. Dominic needed to pay and suffer the same way. " I'm sorry about my brother, he can't control his temper sometimes," Adeline sighed. I gulped and smiled, " I think I pushed him too far," I said. "But it's unlike him to .. " she trailed her words just as I got curious. Adeline sighed and smiled. " He's a good man.." I raised an eyebrow to her, "Sometimes," She added sheepishly. I rolled my eyes but didn't comment. I wanted to change the topic so I did. " I didn't know about you," I said but she just shrugged her shoulders without saying anything. We went to Charles' cafe for late lunch since it was 3 pm. As soon as we entered, a few wolves inside looked our way, they sneered at me but smiled and bowed to Adeline who was not too friendly to them. " They don't do well with outsiders, but they'll warm up to you soon," Adeline said and looked around before pulling out a chair near the counter. " I missed this place" She had a faraway look in her eyes, I was about to ask why she stayed from home but an enthusiastic voice called. " Ashley!" I turned towards Charles, he was smiling and I got up to give him a quick hug. " Welcome_ " he started but froze as his eyes landed on Adeline. " Hey," the alpha's sister got to her feet and gave him a long tight hug. Charles whispered something in her ear that made her blush and I wondered what relationship they shared. When they pulled away, he let out a whistle. " Beautiful as always," Adeline smirked and crossed her arms against her chest. " Prettiest of them all," she said. " Indeed," They laughed and we took our seats, just as a waiter came to take our order. " So when did you get back?" Charles asked. I watched them talk like the best of buddies and share inside jokes. I learned that they were childhood friends and even dated at one point but separated when Adeline found her mate. " How's Zaza," Charles asked. " Who's Zaza?" I questioned, they've been mentioned the person in their talk. " My daughter," Adeline answered happily. I didn't know she had a child. " I didn't know you had a child," " She's four, you'll meet her," she said. " And Guston?" Charles asked with a sly smile. Adeline took a long sip of her mojito before answering. " Divorced," I was confused, I didn't know mates could divorce yet she said it so casually. A mate is a werewolf's soulmate, the bond was blessed by the wolf goddess herself and it's non like any other. I didn't want to ask or seem curious so I just ignored and asked Charles a question " Can you hire me to work here?" He seems puzzled and shook his head. " You want to work ...here?" They asked in unison and I nodded. " Why?" " Look, I'm always in the house, it gets boring plus I need money," I answered Adeline's question. " Well, ask the alpha for money. " I glared at Charles, I can't do that, one of the reasons for my wanting this job was liberty of movement around the pack. I could go anywhere in the name of work or snuck out to visit my sister and give my report. " No, I want to earn my own money, Charles, I do nothing," I explained quietly His resolve weakened and finally let out a sigh. " I guess I could use more staff," he said and I squealed, pulling him into a hug. " Thank you, thank you!" He pulled away and said. " But... Alpha Russel has to give his permission," I squinted my eyes in confusion, permission, who is he to me? I snorted " I don't need his approval to work!" I was serious, Adeline looked away awkwardly and I narrowed my eyes on Charles. " You do," he simply said. I was going to retort but her phone rang and Charles got up. " Ladies, enjoy your food," he smiled and kissed Adeline Russel on the cheek. He came to do the same and whisper. " No permission from my alpha, I can't give you work," he was serious. I watched Charles go away dumbfounded. I turned to Adeline " he's joking, right?" She shrugged her shoulders and smiled sheepishly. Oh boy.
