Rejected

"I, Alpha Kael Draven, reject you, Elara Vance, as my mate and Luna of the Silvercrest Pack." The words hit her like claws to the chest. Elara stood frozen in the center of the ceremonial clearing while three hundred wolves stared at her in silence. Some with pity. Most with laughter they were barely holding back. The girl in the front row — Sienna, the Alpha's chosen — was already smiling. *This cannot be happening.* But it was. Ten seconds ago, the Moon Goddess had shown Elara her fated mate. The bond had snapped into place inside her chest like a second heartbeat. She had looked up. She had seen him standing on the elevated platform with his amber eyes locked on hers and for one shining second she had felt *chosen* for the first time in eighteen years. Then he had walked down the steps. Then he had crossed the clearing. Then he had looked at her — the omega girl in the threadbare gray dress with tangled brown hair and dirty bare feet — and he had rejected her in front of every wolf in the Northern Territories. "Say the words, omega." Kael Draven's voice was cold enough to freeze the air. "Complete the rejection." Elara's mouth opened. No sound came out. Her wolf was screaming inside her chest. Not whimpering. *Screaming.* Clawing at her ribs. Begging her not to say it. Begging her to fight. Begging her to do anything except stand there and let this man throw her away like garbage. "She can't even speak," someone in the crowd whispered. Laughter rippled through the wolves. "The Goddess made a mistake pairing her with our Alpha." "Look at her. She's shaking." "Poor thing thought she was going to be Luna." Kael took another step closer. He was close enough now that she could smell him. Cedar and smoke and something darker underneath. Close enough that she could see the muscle ticking in his jaw. Close enough that she could see his hands curled into fists at his sides so tight that blood was beading between his fingers. He was bleeding. *Why is he bleeding?* "Say. The words." His voice dropped to something only she could hear. "Say them, Elara. Now. Before this gets worse." She looked up into his amber eyes. And in that one moment — one fraction of a second before she was going to obey, before she was going to lower her head and complete the rejection and walk back to the omega quarters and disappear the way she had always disappeared — something moved behind his gaze. Pain. Not disgust. Not hatred. Not the cold contempt he was performing for the crowd. *Pain.* He was hurting. He was hurting as badly as she was. And he was doing this anyway. "Why," she whispered. His jaw locked. "Say the words, Elara." "Why are you doing this?" "*Say the words.*" Something inside her broke. Not her heart. Her heart had shattered the moment he spoke the rejection. What broke now was something older. Something deeper. Something that had been sleeping in her blood for eighteen years, waiting for exactly this much pain to wake it up. Her hands began to glow. At first she thought she was imagining it. A trick of the torchlight. Her vision blurring from tears she was refusing to shed. Then the light climbed her arms. White-gold. Ancient. So bright it cast shadows across the clearing. The crowd went silent. Sienna stopped smiling. Kael Draven's amber eyes went wide. "What—" he started. Elara looked down at her hands. They were burning. Not with fire. With something older than fire. Something that had been buried in her bones her entire life and was finally, *finally*, being let out. The ground beneath her feet cracked. The ancient oaks surrounding the clearing groaned and their leaves burst into golden flame that did not burn. And then, one by one, every wolf in the clearing dropped to their knees. Not by choice. The elders. The warriors. The visiting Alphas from the border territories. Every single wolf's legs gave out beneath them and they knelt for the omega girl in the gray dress like she was a queen returning from the dead. Every wolf. Except one. Kael Draven was still standing. Barely. His legs were shaking. His teeth were bared. Sweat was pouring down his temples. His entire body was fighting something Elara could see but not name — a force pulling him toward the ground with the weight of every ancestor he had ever descended from. He would not kneel. He *could not* kneel. Because if the Alpha who had just rejected her knelt for her in front of three hundred witnesses, everything he had just done would be exposed as a lie. So he stood. Shaking. Breaking. Staring at her like he was seeing her for the first time. "What are you," he breathed. Elara looked at her glowing hands. She looked at the wolves on their knees. She looked at the man who had just destroyed her and was now looking at her like she was something out of a nightmare he had been having his entire life. And for the first time in eighteen years, Elara Vance smiled. It was not a kind smile. "I don't know," she said quietly. The light in her hands flared brighter. "But I think you should have found out before you rejected me." She turned. She walked out of the clearing. Every wolf remained on their knees as she passed. Elder Mirren. The warriors. Sienna — beautiful, chosen Sienna — kneeling in the dirt with her white dress ruined and tears streaming down her face. None of them could move. None of them could look away. Elara walked past all of them and did not look back. Behind her, she heard Kael Draven's knees finally hit the ground. The sound of it cracked through the clearing like a bone breaking. She kept walking. Into the forbidden forest. Into the dark. Into whatever she had just become. And somewhere in the shadows between the ancient trees, a woman with violet eyes was already waiting for her. Smiling. *"There you are,"* the woman whispered. *"I have been waiting three hundred years."*
