He quickly sat down beside the driver as the only passenger in the car. The driver controlled the steering wheel and the car moved away gently. It was a sunny day, so Rowan began to feel heat inside the car. He wound down one of the glasses. Suddenly, the car began to make some noises. “Oh, what a s**t!” the driver hadn’t finished his words before the car halted. The driver was lucky that they had maneuvered through the traffic jam before the car halted. “I hope the car won’t delay me?” Rowan asked slowly. He was already wondering what was wrong with the car. “It’s not a big case, I think. I will sort it out,” the driver spoke as if he was a mechanic. “Alright. I shall be waiting…,” Rowan said and clutched his phone. The driver clutched the toolbox. He opened the door. He glimpsed at Rowan before he closed the door. However, after spending ten minutes on the road, Rowan was running out of patience. He alighted from the car. He saw the driver bending his head and touching some parts of the car’s engine. “What’s wrong with the car?” “I don’t know.” “I think I will just call a mechanic.” “You should have done that before now.” Rowan grimaced. “Sorry, man. I think I could handle it all alone.” “Alright…” “f**k!” “What’s wrong?” “My mechanic isn’t picking up his calls.” “What do we do now?” “I think I will just go and get a mechanic over there.” “Can I have my money back, so that I can take another car?” Rowan grimaced. “You shouldn’t do that. Just hold on while I go to a mechanic's shop,” the driver said, patting Rowan on the back. “Alright.” “I shall be waiting inside the car.” “There are newspapers inside the car. You can pick one of them to keep you company.” Rowan entered the car. He picked up a newspaper and began to glance through it. He muttered some words to himself as he read through the newspaper. Rowan heard the chunk of a vehicle. He raised his head up only to see a panel van parked some few distance away from him. He saw a traffic warden in uniform alighting from the van. The traffic warden’s eyes were covered with dark lenses. Rowan became worried when he saw the traffic warden walking in his direction. “Open this door!” the traffic warden screamed as he hit the door so hard. “Good afternoon, sir…” Rowan said timidly as soon as he opened the door. “I’m a traffic warden.” He took out his identification card from his pocket and showed it to Rowan. “It’s nice meeting you, sir,” Rowan said with a smile, but the traffic warden cut him down. “Oh, save me that. Do you know you are parking your car wrongly? I guess you want to cause accidents for pedestrians.” “I don’t own this car. It belongs to a taxi driver.” “This exotic car belongs to a taxi driver? What a lie!” “I am telling you the truth, sir. He was taking me to the bank before the car knocked down at this spot.” “That’s a lie. I have every evidence, young man.” “You are reading newspapers on the driver’s seat, how will you explain that?” “That? Well, I was waiting for the driver. He has gone to call the mechanic who will fix the car.” “I will believe you under one condition.” The traffic warden put the identification card inside his pocket. “What?” “Can I have the phone number of the driver?” the traffic warden said with a smile. “No, you can’t.” “Why?” “You don’t expect me to have the number of a man I don’t even know very well!” Rowan screamed. “You are shouting at me?” “I am sorry.” “You have to follow me to the police station, so you can explain yourself better.” “What…?” “I need to see my son. He is dying in the hospital.” “Come out now!” the traffic warden screamed. “You cannot force me to get out of this car. You can go and check your children at home…” “Are you talking to me?” the traffic warden said, slapping Rowan on the face. “You slapped me?” Rowan said with a quavering voice, holding his left cheek. “And I will slap you again!” the traffic warden spewed temperamentally. Two men walked onto the scene. They knew everything wasn’t right. “What is going on here?” one of the men asked. “Ask this b****y civilian!” the traffic warden said rudely. He was already sweating because he had been sitting in the scorching sun for so long. “I will sue you for slander.” “That’s after you’ve reported yourself to the police station.” The traffic warden drew Rowan’s hand and Rowan pulled out his hand from his grip. “You must be stupid!” the traffic warden said, hitting Rowan on the face. “You slapped me again?” Rowan said, holding his cheek. “And I will slap you again.” The traffic warden tried to slap Rowan again, but one of the men held his hand. “Leave him alone. I will definitely remove his scrotum!” Rowan screamed. He was already panting. “f**k you and your death threat…” “Get out of the car now before I remove your eyes from their sockets.” “I can’t leave my car here and follow you to your so-called police station.” “But you said it’s not your car?” “Call it whatever you want.” “I perceive you are an addicted liar. You will explain to the police when we get to the station,” the traffic warden said, nodding his head. “And you think I will follow you to the police station?” “You had better do it, so you can save yourself from further punishment. You will explain your own side of the story to the police,” one of the men said. After being persuaded, Rowan alighted from the car. He followed the traffic warden at the back as he walked in the direction of the van.
