WHITNEY I walked out of my office building, having secured my hasty departure by convincing my supervisor I was chasing an exclusive that couldn't be missed. I headed straight for the parking garage, my mind utterly consumed by the terrifying silence from Ruby. I was desperately worried. Her diner had been attacked only yesterday, and now with that hushed, explosive news circulating, I just wanted to make sure she is safe. If she would only pick up my calls or even respond to one text message, I would feel instantly at ease. I had tried reaching her numerous times yesterday, too. Although she didn't pick or respond to any of my messages right away, she eventually messaged me back to say she'd be at the diner. And I was so relieved just to see her there that I let the initial silence go.
