Episode 5 The Hunt Begins

Kristen Bell strode through the glass doors of the Los Angeles Field Office just minutes before she risked being officially late—a rarity for an agent whose reputation for punctuality and precision had earned her the nickname “the Gold Standard” among her peers. Her body felt leaden, every step weighed down by the restless night she had endured. Images from the park briefing and the haunting near-miss with the black sedan kept replaying in her mind like a loop she couldn’t pause. She clutched her coffee tighter, hoping the caffeine would sharpen her focus. The moment she reached her desk, she sank into her leather chair and stared at the blank computer screen, which reflected her tired eyes back at her. Doubts swirled. How had her quiet vacation unraveled into this? Before she could spiral further, the sharp buzz of the intercom shattered the silence. “Bell! Task force room. Now,” SAC Timothy’s voice snapped, leaving no room for delay. Kristen grabbed her notebook and phone, smoothed her tailored navy blazer, and stepped into the corridor. The hallway seemed endless today, the overhead lights too bright, the recycled air too cold against her skin. She pushed open the heavy steel doors to the main briefing room and stepped into a wall of tension so thick it was almost palpable. Nearly two dozen elite agents filled the space. Some stood rigidly along the back wall with arms folded, others sat in straight-backed chairs, their expressions grim and alert. At the head of the long conference table, SAC Timothy presided like a general preparing for war. The large wall-mounted screen cast an icy blue glow across his stern face, highlighting the deep lines of stress etched there. “Sit,” he commanded without preamble. Chairs scraped in unison as everyone complied. Kristen scanned the room quickly for Mike but found his seat empty. Timothy didn’t wait. He launched straight into the briefing, his voice low and intense. “The AI Defense Code is gone,” he began. “This isn’t some minor encryption key. We’re talking about a multi-billion-dollar system developed over more than a decade by the country’s brightest minds. It serves as the ultimate digital safeguard for critical national infrastructure—power grids, secure communications, even our most sensitive defense installations. If this code falls into the wrong hands, hostile actors could compromise everything from civilian utilities to strategic military assets. The consequences would be catastrophic.” The room was dead silent. Kristen’s stomach tightened as she absorbed the full scope of the threat. Timothy continued, pacing slowly. “The private contracting firm poured ten years into building these layered defenses. Now, one individual has walked out with the master key. We—” The doors opened again. Mike entered, his usual easy demeanor replaced by visible exhaustion. Dark circles shadowed his eyes as he carried a thick manila folder to the table and slid it toward Timothy before dropping into the chair across from Kristen. He gave her only a brief, serious nod—no jokes, no teasing smirk. Timothy opened the new folder and scanned its contents. “Good. Fresh intelligence just came in. Our teams have confirmed the suspect is already in active negotiations with foreign buyers. If that code crosses borders, the damage to national security will be irreversible.” He gestured to the tech analyst. “Zack, bring up the visuals.” The large screen flickered to life. The first image hit Kristen like a physical blow. It was him. Alex Hunter stared back at her in high resolution—sharp, intelligent eyes, strong jawline, and an unmistakable aura of confidence. The same man whose broad chest she had collided with at The Velvet Table. The same rich voice that had lingered in her memory. Any lingering hope that it might be a different person evaporated instantly. Her breath caught. A storm of emotions crashed through her: disbelief, betrayal, and something dangerously close to disappointment. She forced her face into a neutral mask, but her pulse hammered wildly. A surveillance video began playing. Alex moved through a busy international airport terminal with effortless grace, wearing an expensive leather coat that draped perfectly over his tall frame. Even through grainy security footage, his presence dominated the scene. For a split second, he glanced toward the camera, and the corner of his mouth lifted in what looked like a knowing smirk. It was almost as if he sensed he was being watched. “This is our target,” Timothy said through clenched teeth, pointing at the screen. “Alex Hunter. Born into extreme wealth, yet he’s chosen a path of high-stakes financial crime and identity manipulation. This isn’t petty theft. This is a direct assault on national security. He treats borders and laws like minor inconveniences. We believe he plans to auction the code to the highest bidder—possibly state actors or private military groups. We cannot allow that to happen.” The room pulsed with shared determination. “Yes, sir!” several agents responded. Timothy’s gaze swept across the team before landing squarely on Kristen. “Bell.” She met his eyes with steady composure, even as anxiety and resolve warred inside her. “Sir.” “You closed the Thorne case with exceptional skill and precision under extreme pressure. Your track record speaks for itself. Effective immediately, you are the lead agent on this operation. I want you to build the profile, find every weakness in his network, identify his contacts, and stop him before he sells that code. Dismantle his operation piece by piece. Do you understand?” Kristen swallowed hard, pushing down the personal connection that threatened to cloud her judgment. “Yes, sir. I understand.” “Excellent.” Timothy resumed pacing. “Phase one is comprehensive intelligence gathering. We need a full psychological profile. Financial trails. Known associates. Anyone in his inner circle who might become an asset to us. We find the entry point—whether it’s a disgruntled employee, a former lover, or a business rival—and we exploit it. Questions?” The room remained focused. One agent raised a hand to clarify timeline expectations, and Timothy answered sharply before continuing. “Our nation’s security is under threat,” he said, his voice rising with intensity. “What are we going to do about it?” “We fight for it!” the team roared back in unison, the familiar Bureau rallying cry echoing off the walls. Timothy turned back to Kristen, his expression grave. “This is officially your duty, Bell. Alex Hunter is a ghost—slippery, calculating, and always one step ahead. Do not let him disappear into the shadows. If he succeeds, the failure rests on this team—and especially on you as lead. Are you ready?” Kristen’s jaw tightened. The charming stranger she had briefly idealized as Prince Charming was gone. In his place stood a high-value fugitive. A threat. The prey. “I’m ready, sir,” she replied, her voice steel. Beneath the table, her hands clenched into fists. Her eyes locked onto Alex Hunter’s image on the screen. The subtle smirk in the photo now felt like a personal challenge. She would study him, anticipate him, and bring him down. The briefing continued for another twenty minutes, covering logistics, inter-agency coordination, and immediate action items. Kristen took detailed notes, her mind shifting fully into operational mode. She assigned preliminary tasks to two junior agents and coordinated with Mike on digital forensics priorities. By the time Timothy dismissed the team, the weight of responsibility had settled firmly on her shoulders. As agents filed out, Mike lingered near her chair. “You good?” he asked quietly. “I will be,” she replied. “Let’s get this done.” ——— Back at her desk, Kristen opened a new case file on her computer and began compiling every scrap of information they had on Alex Hunter. Financial records, known properties, past associations. She worked methodically, refusing to let the memory of that rich baritone voice or the scent of his cologne distract her. She was deep in analysis when her desk phone rang sharply. Ring-ring-ring-ring! Kristen glanced at the caller ID, her pulse quickening. This was only the beginning.
