7.Eyes that see through me.

Enya's Point of View I was fed up with introducing myself to people I didn't think I'd ever meet in this life... I stood up reluctantly. "I'm Enya. Computer Science major. I studied at St. Andrews High School in Devon." Simple. Quick. I wanted to sit down as soon as possible, but Noah's eyes lingered on me. He smiled slightly as he added, "Ah. A future engineer of logic. Great. I expect you won't let your mind wander too often in my lectures." The class laughed softly. His words were professional, exactly how a professor should sound. But in my heart, I felt something different. That tone… the way his gaze lingered on me… it felt too familiar. Too personal. I smiled faintly and sat back down quickly. I didn't want to draw any more attention. For the rest of the lecture, I made sure not to lose focus. My eyes stayed on the professor, my hand taking notes like an enthusiastic student. I couldn't let him call me out again. Finally, the lecture ended. I slipped my books into my backpack and tried to escape with the crowd. "Enya." The sound of my name, spoken in his deep, calm voice, stopped me. I froze and turned around. He was standing by the podium, his hands neatly in his pockets, but his eyes were fixed on me. "Could you stay for a moment?" Me? Why? The students left the room, chatting loudly. Even Rose left, whispering she would wait for me in the hallway. My heart pounded as I walked toward the podium and stood in front of him. I could still remember the last time I stood in front of him in my previous life. I had been beyond frustrated, and he had been filled with concern… and maybe even anger? But now was not the time to dwell on the past. I looked at him directly, as if asking why he wanted me to stay. "I've talked to your peer mentors. They told me you're the representative for your group," he said in his deep voice. I nodded slowly. "Yes." "That's good." Noah smiled politely, but his gaze… I didn't know how to interpret it. "It would be convenient if you could also serve as my representative. Since you're already coordinating with your group, it will make communication easier." My throat went dry. I found it even difficult to properly breathe. Why me? His logic was reasonable, but it wasn't something I wanted. I was already dealing with enough. "Me? But I'm sure there's someone more interested..." "Do you have any problem being my representative, Enya?" His voice was still smooth and calm, but it carried a weight that pressed against me. I swallowed hard. I wanted to say no. But the word wouldn't come. "No problem. I'll do it," I finally agreed. "Great…" he smiled softly, and his eyes… they almost looked satisfied. "I'm sure you'll do well, Enya. I look forward to working with you." I forced a smile and nodded. Then I left as quickly as possible. My heart felt heavy, for reasons I couldn't explain. Noah Watson. He was the same old Noah, the deep, mature, calm professor. But there was something different too, something I couldn't put into words. And it unsettled me deeply. I didn't look back. If I had, I would have seen the way his eyes lingered on my back until the door closed behind me. ******************************** That evening, the meeting with the peer mentors began. Sandy, cheerful as ever, took the lead. "Okay, everyone!" she called out. "Let's talk about clubs, sports, and volunteering. There are so many activities to choose from. I encourage all of you to join, it's the fastest way to make connections and learn." She handed out flyers while Raphael stood nearby, tall and quiet but commanding, occasionally adding details Sandy forgot to mention. I tried to forget the turmoil in my mind and blend in, asking questions, pretending to be interested. But the longer I tried, the heavier I felt. Finally, Sandy clapped her hands. "Attention, everyone!" "Time for a little secret," she said mischievously, her eyes shining with excitement. "Tonight we're going out for a drink! Sponsored by your lovely mentors!" The room erupted in cheers. Excitement and laughter filled the air. Everyone was thrilled. Everyone except me. My heart tightened. The thought of sitting in a bar with Raphael across from me was unbearable. I wasn't in the mood for this at all. I waited until the group was distracted talking about the outing, then walked to Sandy. Pressing a hand to my forehead, I said quietly, "Sandy… I'm sorry. I have a terrible headache. I don't think I can go out tonight." Her face shifted instantly from excitement to concern. "Oh, Enya… have you taken any medicine?" "I'll take something when I get home. After some painkillers and rest, I'll be fine." "You don't need to go all the way home for that. The medical centre here is very good. Let me take you. You can get some painkillers and sleep for a bit. We still have about an hour and a half. I'm sure you'll feel better by then." Sandy wasn't ready to let me go. Panic rose inside me. My head started to ache for real. "No, really… that's not necessary. I think I should..." Before I could finish, a shadow fell over us. Raphael. Perfect timing. He looked down at me with his usual cold, indifferent expression. "If you can't make it today, then we'll postpone the outing. There's no point if our representative is missing." On the surface, his words sounded natural, precisely what a peer mentor would say. But when my eyes met his, I felt something else. Because in those green eyes, I saw it clearly. He knew. He had seen straight through my lie. ****************************** Raphael's Point of View This girl. How could she lie so easily about a headache? Just by looking at her nervous face, I could tell she wasn't sick. She simply didn't want to go out… With us. Or was it only with me? From the moment our eyes met, she had been acting strange. To others, even to Sandy, she looked like a lovely girl, polite and cooperative. But whenever she was near me… whenever our eyes met… her gaze filled with emotions I couldn't precisely read. Fear? Pain? Anger? I don't know... All I knew was that she was trying to avoid me. But… Why should I let her?
