Prologue

Out at sea, the storm was tearing the cliffs apart. The gale roared like a wild beast waking up from a century-long sleep, slamming into the villa and making the thick stone walls shudder. But inside the bedroom, the silence was suffocating. A dead, heavy silence. Clara bolted upright. Her head throbbed with a blinding pain, her eyelids heavy as lead. She blinked hard, trying to pierce through the dim darkness. Her whole body felt wrecked, every joint aching as if she had just survived a total physical collapse. By instinct, she reached up to press a trembling hand against her forehead. But the second she moved, a cold, sharp sound dragged her straight back to reality. Clink. Thud. The dry scrape of metal echoed ruthlessly in the quiet room. Clara froze. The breath caught tight in her throat. Under the dim, amber glow of the nightstand lamp, she slowly looked down toward the foot of the bed. Her heart dropped. A solid gold chain - each link thick, flawlessly forged, and unyielding - was locked tight around her pale, slender ankle. The metal ring bit into her skin, leaving raw, angry red marks. The long chain snaked across the silk mattress, running straight to the foot of the massive ebony king-size bed before anchoring deep into the frame. The icy bite of pure gold against her bare skin made her shudder. A sickening mix of humiliation and raw fear washed over her, freezing every thought in her head. Her high-end silk nightgown was completely disheveled, ruined with faint, messy smudges. The bitter wreckage of a failed escape that had been snuffed out just hours ago. Every shred of trust she had held onto for so long was gone, shattered into unfixable pieces. It turned out all that tenderness, the tight embraces, and his vows of eternal love were nothing but a flawless performance. The high-stakes game of hide-and-seek between them was officially over. She had lost, and she had lost horribly. Stripped of her freedom, she was caged by the very luxury he had wrapped around her. Click. The heavy, leather-padded bedroom door pushed open with a dull thud. Clara’s heart hammered wildly against her ribs, the rush of blood thumping in her ears so loud it almost drowned out the storm outside. From the murky light of the hallway, a tall figure stepped inside. His presence instantly swallowed the room. Julian wasn't rushing at all. He took his time slipping off his expensive, custom-tailored suit jacket, tossing it carelessly over the back of a chair, before lazily reaching up to loosen his dark silk tie. Every movement oozed high-society elegance, but in this suffocating space, it felt more like an executioner preparing for a trial. His dark, piercing eyes locked onto the fragile, trembling form on the bed. The fake warmth of the past was entirely gone. Now, there was only a raw, absolute urge to possess - the sheer satisfaction of a seasoned hunter that had finally cornered his most prized prey. He walked slowly toward the bed. Each footstep was heavy on the hardwood floor, sounding like a death countdown in the quiet room. Stopping at the edge of the mattress, Julian slowly sank to one knee - a gesture that looked like a proposal but carried the crushing weight of total submission. His large, rough, warm hand reached out, his long fingers gripping her chin just tightly enough to force her pale face up. He didn't use enough force to hurt her, but he was firm enough to make her look at reality, to make her stare into the cruelty and the twisted, warped devotion swirling in his eyes. The corner of his mouth twitched into a triumphant smile. When he spoke, his signature low, gravelly voice was incredibly smooth and gentle, like honey poured into her ear. But to Clara, every single word felt like a life sentence that could never be overturned: "Stay right here, sweetheart. No matter how many times you try to run, I will personally find you and bring you back where you belong. Drop the act. You are never stepping foot out of my world again. Not even half a step." His hand left her chin, his fingers trailing softly up her cold cheek, stroking her skin as if to soothe the very terror he was causing. The gold chain at her ankle remained dead silent, holding fast. Clara didn't answer. She didn't even have the strength left to scream or fight back. She slowly closed her eyes, hiding the weakness and the burning resentment flooding her chest. An icy tear slipped from the corner of her eye, tracing down her cheek and soaking into the soft silk pillow. In the darkness of her own mind, one massive question kept looping, tormenting her soul. Where exactly did it all go wrong? Was it the day she arrived in this city with such grand ambitions, completely confident she could run the game? Or was it the day she mistakenly handed her whole faith to this sugar-coated beast, effectively handing him the keys to the golden cage she was sitting in today? He didn't wait for her permission. He never did. Julian’s other hand shot up unexpectedly, his fingers burying themselves deep into her tangled hair, gripping her firmly to anchor her face to his. He tilted her head back at an agonizing angle, exposing the long line of her throat, then brutally crashed his mouth down onto hers. It wasn't a kiss; it was a ruthless claim of ownership. His lips were hot, firm, and fiercely hungry, consuming her sharp gasp before it could even leave her lungs. He didn't care about her consent; he forced her to open up, his tongue moving past her lips with absolute authority, plundering her mouth with a raw, primal desperation that choked her system. He tasted like expensive bourbon, rich mint, and terrifying power. His possessiveness was a tangible thing, heavy and crushing. He kissed her as if trying to suck the very soul out of her body, wanting to imprint himself so deeply onto her that she could never wash him away. Every single movement was a declaration of ownership, a savage reminder that every inch of her now belonged to him. The heavy scent of his cologne wrapped around her like an intoxicating drug, making her head spin even more. By instinct, her hands flew up to push him away, clawing at his chest, but he only deepened the kiss, pressing her chest against his hard, solid muscles. The brutal contrast between his soft silk shirt and her own bare skin made her gasp against his lips. He twined his tongue with hers, his mouth moving in a wild, practiced rhythm that made her toes curl against the mattress. Outside, the storm kept howling and the waves kept slamming into the cliffs. But the golden cage out at sea had officially closed, locking two destinies into a dark, lie-riddled game of power.
