/Kurt's pov/
"Sit down, Nick," Roman said with a chuckle and a shake of his head in amusement.
Division Six was a good chance for him since he would have hands-on field experience while also having specialized areas in which he could be trained. Nick aspired to be a skilled shooter, and he was particularly adept at long-range shooting.
"All right, so they want you to start on Monday. Officer Tate will want you to report to him at 9 a.m. sharp. Don't be late for your appointment. Here's your file, make sure you read it," Roman said as he handed Nick a brown packet containing his paperwork.
Yes, Sir, and thank you, Sir," Nick responded, bowing formally but giggling hysterically at the same time.
"All right, Nick, you can go enjoy the cuisine." It's necessary for me to talk with Kurt in private," Roman directed, motioning for him to depart with a gesture. When Nick passed by, I smacked him on the back of the head, quietly wishing that I would get something as wonderful as his. Officer Roman didn't say anything until the door had closed behind him. "Kurt, you've been asked to assist with something really essential. "This isn't going to sit well with you," he said, winced and shook his head.
When I saw the look on his face, my stomach dropped. This was clearly not a positive development. "All right, sir, I'll pay attention," I responded firmly. It didn't matter to me what kind of challenge they threw at me. I put forth the effort, and it paid off. With the exception of long-range shooting, in which I finished a close second to Nick, I had received the highest marks in every evaluation. I held five separate departmental records, including those for hand-to-hand combat, tactical planning, and hostage handling, among other things. Nobody has ever graduated with the distinction that I did.
He groaned and extended a brown package in my direction. I snatched it from her and tore it open with glee, discovering a police file for a Jane Spencer on the inside. I opened it with a glimmer of curiosity, having no idea what it was all about. There was a picture of her on the opening page of the book. She was a thing of breathtaking beauty. She was nineteen years old at the time and a college student, according to this.
I raised my eyes to Roman. "Can you tell me who this is?" I inquired, perplexed as to why he had given me this girl's paperwork in the first place.
"The lady in question is the daughter of a very significant man. "Her name is Jane Spencer, and she is the daughter of Senator Tom Spencer," he remarked with courtesy.
My curiosity was caught very immediately. Tom Spencer was a Presidential candidate who was widely expected to win the election later this year and take over the oval office; he was well-liked and, from what I'd heard, he was a wonderful individual.
"Okay, so why do I have her file?" says the investigator. I questioned as I flipped over the pages and scanned the content. She was just dismissed from Stanford University. Within a year and a half, she had attended four more institutions of higher learning, and had been expelled from each one for acts of violence or property destruction.
"She was stolen by John Thomas when she was sixteen years old. He murdered her lover at a nightclub and then imprisoned her for nearly a year against her will. The only reason she was discovered was because the cops were searching his home for narcotics when they came across her. "Do you have any idea who John Thomas is, do you?" he inquired, lifting his brows in my direction.
I blinked fast and nodded. Everyone knew who John Thomas was; he was the leader of a criminal organization and the man responsible for the murders of over a thousand people when he detonated explosives at four different subway stations at the same time during peak rush hour in Manhattan. Everyone suspected it was him, but no one could ever prove it, and critical witnesses and evidence had a peculiar habit of disappearing just as the investigation was about to get underway. He was a habitual drug dealer who was also significantly involved in people trafficking out of Romania.
Samson Roberts, Miss Spencer's lover, was murdered and he is presently receiving a life term for his crime. " She had testified for the prosecution, and there was additional evidence that tied him directly to the murder, which was presented during the trial. Everyone is aware of who he is and what he does, yet he has always managed to escape beyond our grasp. The murder of Jackson Roberts is the only case that has ever progressed to the point of going to trial. "His conviction was one of the best things that could have happened to our country," Roman said, his expression hard.
"All right, sir, so what does this have to do with me?" says the narrator. I inquired, still perplexed as to why I had been informed of this in the first place.
Roman reclined back in his chair, his shoulders relaxed. "Well, John Thomas has a hearing scheduled for later this year. There's a possibility that some evidence was improperly gathered or anything like that. There is a significant likelihood that Miss Spencer will be summoned to testify again because she was the only witness who made it to the trial on the first try. Death threats have been made against her, the most of which have been motivated by her father's identity; however, her family has recently received threats that they believe are originating from John's organization."
He appeared to be keeping an eye on me, waiting for my response. I'm still not sure what you're talking about. Despite the fact that I'd been chosen for an unique job, he was telling me about some female. What was this have to do with me, exactly? This was not a SWAT operation.
He took a big breath and continued. "Alright, I'm just going to say it: she goes through bodyguards at the rate you go through cold beers. She is assigned to a new one, and within a week, she has convinced them to resign. They have refused to collaborate with her. Based on my understanding, she's a true livewire, and she's one tough little tough chick. However, this young lady is immensely significant, not only because she may be called upon to testify against Thomas, but also because she is the daughter of the likely future President. Her father has asked for someone who will be able to deal with her on a day-to-day basis, and she has agreed to this.
As a result, they must be in a specified age range since they will be compelled to accompany her to college and effectively act as her "shadow" until the conclusion of the court case."
Suddenly, it became clear to me where this encounter was heading. I looked at him in surprise as I shook my head and threw the file onto his desk, which he caught. "That is pure and utter nonsense! "I'm SWAT, not some f**king nanny!" says the SWAT officer. I screamed, a disgusted finger pointing at the file.
"This isn't up for argument at this point. They were looking for the greatest agent within an eight-year age range, so they selected the best agents from every department and sent the top ten to Senator Spencer, who personally chose you! You were the sole recent graduate who was taken into consideration. It's a fantastic honor, and you should take pride in it," Roman added convincingly.
I let out a frustrated groan. "What are we doing getting engaged in this?" As I argued, "If she's the daughter of a Senator, then the secret service should be handling this, not us."
He let out a sigh. 'Weller, she's been through the majority of the guys over there.' Aside from that, there aren't very many secret service agents in that age range; usually individuals join the secret service later in their careers," he remarked, a shrug on his face. I looked away as he tilted his head to the side, his eyes drilling straight into mine. It'll just be till the conclusion of the legal case, Kurt." Eight months is all there is to it. Senator Spencer has assured you that you would be able to choose from a variety of positions after that time. "You may have everything you desire, including Front Line."
When I heard those words, my ears perked up. “Seriously?”
He nodded, grinned, and nodded some more. "I knew that would attract your attention, but I need you to understand that this is a very critical assignment for you to do." The possibility of her death and the case falling apart may seem remote, but if John Thomas is released, "hundreds, if not thousands, of people might be killed over the next few years," he stated solemnly.
Okay, I get what you're saying. Do an excellent job babysitting for eight months, and you'll land the job of your dreams. Done! "I get what you're saying, sir." I had a grin on my face now.
"You are not allowed to tell anyone about this. You'll need to explain that you've been sent to a location outside of the state. "You're going to be working covertly with her." He took the paperwork that I'd thrown onto his desk and handed it to me, and I thanked him.
I opened it up again and took another look at the photo of the girl on the screen. I'm hoping against hope that I can go incognito with her! I pondered. Dark hair and dark eyes matched my personal preferences, and she was the most beautiful damn thing I'd ever seen. Due to the fact that she was wearing baggy trousers and a sweatshirt, I couldn't tell what her body looked like, but her face was so lovely that she could pass for a supermodel.
"All right, make sure you go over the briefing file." There's also a DVD in there, which has surveillance video from her previous school, which was the reason she was expelled. "As I previously stated, she's a bit of a badass; the reasons for this are documented in the file, which does not make for pleasant bedtime reading." He stated it with a sigh and stroked the back of his neck as he did so. It made me apprehensive to glance down at the file, wondering what could be so horrible about it that Roman was feeling twitchy and uncomfortable about it.
"All right, well, I guess that's all there is to it. In case someone inquires, I've created a fictitious task for you. You have been booked on a flight for the next morning, and your tickets are in the back of the file. Pack in a relaxed manner; they'll have things waiting for you when you arrive, so don't overdo it with the clothes you bring. Because of the sensitivity of the situation, only a few individuals are aware of it; they're not sure if there's a leak in one of the departments, so if you need anything, you should contact either me or Commander Erikson immediately. His contact information may be found at the back of the file. "I wish you the best of luck, Kurt," he remarked at the end.
He rose to his feet and extended his hand to me; I shook it and then saluted him politely before stepping out the front door. As I walked around the corner, I brought out the sample assignment and read through it again, making sure I remembered all of the information before heading to the graduation celebration with the other grads.
I didn't hang around with the other guys for very long since my flight was scheduled to depart at eight thirty the next morning, and I needed to get packing and make sure I was ready to go. As soon as I was alone in my room, I grabbed the file and sprawled out on my bed to finish reading it. As I had anticipated, it was a terrifying experience.
Jane had been in the custody of John Thomas for a little more than 10 months. Despite the fact that he was nine years older than her, he had considered her to be his lover. She had been denied permission to leave his home, and he had threatened to beat her and emotionally abuse her. Upon being taken into custody, she attempted to commit herself by cutting her wrists. She was found trapped in a cupboard, beaten and broken and on the verge of going into convulsions. She had not spoken to anyone for two weeks following this, and her first words were to a police officer, in which she begged him to murder her.
I took a deep breath and turned to the following page, which had images of her taken the day she was discovered, as well as photographs of her injuries for the police file. They didn't have a pleasant appearance. At the sight of her swollen and bruised face and arms, bile surged to the back of my throat. According to the medical report, she had a recently fractured rib and finger, as well as old, healed fractures in her ribs, wrist, and collarbone, among other things.
