MORGIANA'S POV
The next thing I knew, my back was already on the wall and Alaris continued to kiss me.
And I was kissing him back!
All the things I was thinking about earlier thinned into nothingness and all that mattered was his lips on mine and how his arms were snaked around my body, pulling me closer to him.
I should push him. I should not let this happen. But all those thoughts vanished too as he deepened the kiss and I unconsciously let out a moan.
He pulled back, his lips hovering over mine and I seem to have been drunk with what happened. "Do you feel it, Morgiana?" he asked, his lips lightly touching mine. I leaned close to capture his lips but he leaned back and pushed me to the wall, making him in control.
"I said, do you feel it?" he asked again and I have no idea what I should be feeling.
"I only feel that I need to kiss you again," I muttered before I could stop myself.
He muttered a curse under his breath and in an instant, he was kissing me again. Deeper, harder—as though he wanted to tell me something with that kiss.
I obliged. I kissed him back with the same intensity and he let out a groan when I bit his lower lip. He once again pulled back but then it was as though he couldn't resist it and he claimed my lips once again.
This time, it was gentler and more passionate. I let out another moan unconsciously as he made it deeper. And then I felt it.
It was too sudden that I almost jolted on my feet. It felt like something fell into place. Then I could feel him--his heartbeat and his emotions flowing like a river into me. I gasped as I pushed him away and he was looking at me, waiting for me to say something.
My eyes were wide as I was looking at him.
"What...what was that?" I asked, breathing as hard as him.
"That was us," he answered. "The mating bond."
"What is the mating bond?"
"It's a connection between two creatures. When we are mated, that means we are meant to be together. It's a strong force that both mates can't deny or run away from it."
Everything in my brain was still fuzzy because of the kiss we shared and what he was telling me.
"So that means some powerful entity is deciding who should we be with?"
He nodded. "It all comes down to reproduction. Mating bonds exist to have the wolves reproduce."
I blinked and sucked in a breath. "Basically this is a s****l attraction."
"It goes way deeper than that, Morgiana," he said as though he was deeply offended by what I said. "Mating bond is also a soul connection."
"Soulmate supernatural version."
He nodded at that.
"You're saying we're soulmates?"
"Yes. You felt it."
I did. I did feel it and it was...I don't know how to describe it. When he kissed me, it took a while for me to recognize the connection.
"What does this mean, then? What would happen? Are we going to marry or something?"
He went silent for a second and I was just staring at him, waiting for him to say something because I honestly don't know what it would mean. We are bound by some entity to be mates. To be soulmates. I--Well, I've always had a massive crush on him but I honestly don't know what to think about marrying him.
"I don't know," he said and some part of me was disappointed by that.
He took a step back and something inside me protested at that. I want him to be close like he did earlier but then again what should I say?
"What are mates supposed to do?" I asked and he shook his head. "Do you even like me, Alaris?"
He looked at me when I asked that, eyes slightly wide. He clearly wasn't expecting that kind of straightforward answer but I can't be beating around the bush, especially with regard to things like this.
Alaris was silent and he clearly doesn't know how to answer my question. But I have other questions that I need him to answer. It can't be left unanswered.
"When did you find out that we were mates?" I asked and he furrowed his brows.
"It doesn't matter—"
"It matters. So answer the question: when did you find out that we were mates?"
I could see the hesitation in his eyes and I prayed he's not going to say what I think he would say.
"During that night when you transformed into a wolf," he answered and I felt like I was betrayed.
"So you decided not to kill me because I was your mate. Not because I saved Giro?"
"No," he said and then ran a hand to his hair in frustration. "You saved Giro first before I realized you were my mate. The moment I saw you standing up for those hunters, I decided not to...kill you."
"Who else knows?"
He swallowed before he said, "Laurent. Hawke knows too but I did not tell him. Somehow his magic just...sensed it."
"Other than Laurent, none of the other wolves know? Why?"
"Because having you as my mate is not something they're going to approve of."
I was silent as I looked at him.
"Then I think we got our answer as to what we should do about this," I said and he looked at me in question. "We just let it be. We're mates but other than s****l attraction, we have nothing else. I may not look like it but I would prefer to have an emotional connection with my partner, Alaris. I admit I like you and I think you have known it. I can't be with someone who doesn't feel the same."
He looked at me as if he couldn't believe what I was saying. He opened his mouth as if to say something but then a knock came on my door. We both whirled to see Nico standing by the door. Based on the look on his face, I guessed he was about to say something that I won't like.
"The vampires are trying to cross the border," he said and both I and Alaris ran outside.
***
The border was just a signboard that says Welcome To Great Oaks. But with witch magic, some cant enter that easily. Like the vampires who were standing just a few meters ahead of the signboard.
When we got there, both wolves and witches were there led by Hawke and Laurent. Hawke looked pissed while Laurent was just standing coolly on the side with both his hands in his pockets. He looked bored more than anything.
I recognized some of the vampires as the ones who ambushed us earlier. I find it creepy that we left them dead earlier and now they're standing in front of us, perfectly alive.
"I think you have no business here, Nara. Tell your minions to go back before Hawke mass murders you all over again." Alaris stood too near the border—wait, no. He crossed over the border. Either he's stupid or just too confident hed take all the vampires down should they decide to attack.
But the vampire named Nara just grinned in Alaris' direction. "I think I do, Alaris. See, my brother, Adrian is his name, by the way, was killed yesterday."
"You know very well vampires are not allowed here."
"Oh yes, I know. And I also think that what you did to Adrian was just reasonable."
I looked around me and I could sense the tension hanging in the air. As though something was about to explode and we were just waiting for it to happen.
Nara stepped forward and I could have sworn the tension rose even higher.
"See, I came with the news that Adrian turned someone before he died. Now, I want to have that vampire. I believe it's the daughter of the renowned Mayor Lukas Hawthorne. Our business is to take her into our side."
"Hell no," said Laurent, and Nara looked at him. "That vampire you're talking about is Arleigh Hawthorne and she belongs to nobody. She's from Great Oaks and she will stay in Great Oaks."
"Well, that's going to be hard for you. Given the fact that she's sired from Adrian...I think you already what that means, right?"
I saw how Laurent clenched his fist inside his pockets. As for Alaris...well, I couldn't see the look on his face but the aura he gives feels intimidating to me. Hawke, on the other hand, raised his hand and before he flicks his wrist, Nara took a step back, still grinning.
"Arleigh Hawthorne will come running toward us. Mark my words," Nara said before they all disappeared in the blink of an eye.
